Book Description

Discover why Robert's Rules "rule"

If you belong to any type of organization—from school board to garden club to bowling league to trade association—chances are this book can save you many boring meeting minutes. This friendly guide translates Robert's Rules of Order, the essential guide for conducting meetings of all types, into principles you can understand and apply the next time "Billy Bully" tries to dominate the discussion or "Debbie Dictator" issues another edict.

If you've ever been frustrated at the way condominium association business was (or wasn't) conducted or fidgeted while PTA members debated whether to have goldfish or pencils as prizes for the elementary school carnival, this is the book for you. Written by a Professional Registered Parliamentarian, it covers everything from the basics of bylaws that establish the real framework of your organization to the requirements for a legal meeting, from how to use an agenda to plan your next meeting and keep things on track to voting procedure and putting ideas into motion—and so much more.

  • This new edition is published in response to the revised 11th edition of Robert's Rules of Order
  • Techniques for following parliamentary procedures to effectively manage meetings of any size
  • Helps you stay current with the latest updates to the rules of order and parliamentary procedure

Complete with a glossary of parliamentary terms and sample agendas, reports, and minutes, this guide has everything you need but a gavel. Whether you belong to an elite country club or a civic organization, an investment club or a volunteer fire department, when you use the principles in this book, meetings won't be dominated by the loudest or pushiest member or go on and on and on and on and on . . .

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable Resource! Well Done, Thorough February 28, 2013
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I've been sitting on boards for 5 years now and just joined an executive committee this year. I've fumbled through parliamentary procedures by watching others and following behaviors but I'm sure, with my outspoken nature, I've broken a rule or two.

Having this to read through has not only reinforced the things that I have learned, while explaining them as well, but given me even more knowledge of how to conduct myself during one of these meetings.

I liked having the history and reasoning explained with varying degrees of formality (one of my boards is lose and the other is more formal). I liked having terminology that I've just presumed I knew, explained and defined.

This is very complete, told with humor and detail. You can read it through or just find the parts that pertain to you. Maybe you're rewriting by-laws, or you are attending an annual meeting, just read up on what is pertinent to you. If you are acting as or soon to be acting as chairman, you'd better read it all the way through so that you can run an effective and proper meeting.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Book September 5, 2012
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This was a good book on the subject. Still, I highly recommend that you buy Robert's Rules too. I can't say that this book changed my outlook dramatically. It did offer some useful information. I do recommend this book; however don't make it your only source for material on this subject. Do buy Robert's Rules as well: Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised, 11th edition

4.0 out of 5 stars If you don't want to read the real thing June 16, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Anyone who is a member of an organization that has regular (or even irregular) meetings should know Robert's Rules. While there are a number of guides to conducting meetings, Robert's has certainly stood the test of time. I have looked through many of the books in the ".....For Dummies" series and there is almost always valuable information. Yes, it can be a bit embarrassing taking out a book on the subway that has the word "Dummies" prominently displayed, but get over it. If you know that you are not a dummy....or at least not always one...then what difference does it make that the person across from you blasting Kanye West through his earbuds thinks you are?

4.0 out of 5 stars Good basics for participating in and running a meeting December 17, 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Robert's Rules for Dummies provides an easy to understand overview of Robert's Rules of Order. It hits on what most organizations will need to run an effective meeting and provides some good guidance on how participants and organization chairs can improve their meeting leadership skills.
For anyone in a leadership position, this will not replace a full copy of Robert's Rules but it will help you understand the basics.
I do wish that the Dummies book cited Robert's Rules when explaining a particular issue. For instance, when explaining the various ways to take a vote, it would be nice to know where to find this information in the official Robert's Rules (not by page but by section) since it may be necessary to reference it during a contentious meeting.
Otherwise, this is an easy read and recommended as a supplement to the official Robert's Rules of Order.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to reference and understand December 27, 2012
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This hefty book has 384 pages about how to put Robert's Rules into practice to have a fair and effective meeting. I serve on a local design review commission which has judicial authority, so I wanted to have a greater understanding about my rights and responsibilities in facilitating a successful meeting.

While most of the time, our meetings are pretty friendly and easy going, there are occasional topics which become heated, and after weathering a few of those, I wanted just a little bit more advice about how to handle disagreements and hot button issues in a dignified way to where everybody felt heard and the commission could come to a reasonable conclusion and move the project forward.

This book shared a lot of options and ideas for how to word things, options for different motions that one can make to guide the debate, and other issues of procedure which genuinely help the meeting become more helpful for all those attending.

I would recommend that chairs and vice chairs read or at least skim the entire book so they know all of their potential options for handling a meeting. People like me, who aren't the chair and just want to be a good commission member, might end up just skimming the book and reading sections that are of most interest, or using the book as a reference on how to handle different issues that may come up prior to a difficult meeting.

Overall, I love the format of this Dummies book and how bullet points and sidebars are used to make it easy to navigate and easy to understand all of the information presented. A book like this could easily be a terrible bore, but the author used a number of colorful examples throughout the book which made me smile and made it a pleasure to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars From Complicated to Simple(r) July 25, 2012
By Alison
Jennings takes a complicated and wide topic and deconstructs it for easy comprehension. The book is well organized and entertaining. This would be a wonderful asset to new presiding officers and organization members who wish to actively participate. Highest recommendation!
