Book Description

Discover why Robert's Rules "rule"

If you belong to any type of organization—from school board to garden club to bowling league to trade association—chances are this book can save you many boring meeting minutes. This friendly guide translates Robert's Rules of Order, the essential guide for conducting meetings of all types, into principles you can understand and apply the next time "Billy Bully" tries to dominate the discussion or "Debbie Dictator" issues another edict.

If you've ever been frustrated at the way condominium association business was (or wasn't) conducted or fidgeted while PTA members debated whether to have goldfish or pencils as prizes for the elementary school carnival, this is the book for you. Written by a Professional Registered Parliamentarian, it covers everything from the basics of bylaws that establish the real framework of your organization to the requirements for a legal meeting, from how to use an agenda to plan your next meeting and keep things on track to voting procedure and putting ideas into motion—and so much more.

  • This new edition is published in response to the revised 11th edition of Robert's Rules of Order
  • Techniques for following parliamentary procedures to effectively manage meetings of any size
  • Helps you stay current with the latest updates to the rules of order and parliamentary procedure

Complete with a glossary of parliamentary terms and sample agendas, reports, and minutes, this guide has everything you need but a gavel. Whether you belong to an elite country club or a civic organization, an investment club or a volunteer fire department, when you use the principles in this book, meetings won't be dominated by the loudest or pushiest member or go on and on and on and on and on . . .

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable Resource! Well Done, Thorough February 28, 2013
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I've been sitting on boards for 5 years now and just joined an executive committee this year. I've fumbled through parliamentary procedures by watching others and following behaviors but I'm sure, with my outspoken nature, I've broken a rule or two.

Having this to read through has not only reinforced the things that I have learned, while explaining them as well, but given me even more knowledge of how to conduct myself during one of these meetings.

I liked having the history and reasoning explained with varying degrees of formality (one of my boards is lose and the other is more formal). I liked having terminology that I've just presumed I knew, explained and defined.

This is very complete, told with humor and detail. You can read it through or just find the parts that pertain to you. Maybe you're rewriting by-laws, or you are attending an annual meeting, just read up on what is pertinent to you. If you are acting as or soon to be acting as chairman, you'd better read it all the way through so that you can run an effective and proper meeting.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Book September 5, 2012
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This was a good book on the subject. Still, I highly recommend that you buy Robert's Rules too. I can't say that this book changed my outlook dramatically. It did offer some useful information. I do recommend this book; however don't make it your only source for material on this subject. Do buy Robert's Rules as well: Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised, 11th edition

4.0 out of 5 stars If you don't want to read the real thing June 16, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Anyone who is a member of an organization that has regular (or even irregular) meetings should know Robert's Rules. While there are a number of guides to conducting meetings, Robert's has certainly stood the test of time. I have looked through many of the books in the ".....For Dummies" series and there is almost always valuable information. Yes, it can be a bit embarrassing taking out a book on the subway that has the word "Dummies" prominently displayed, but get over it. If you know that you are not a dummy....or at least not always one...then what difference does it make that the person across from you blasting Kanye West through his earbuds thinks you are?

5.0 out of 5 stars From Complicated to Simple(r) July 25, 2012
By Alison
Format:Paperback
Jennings takes a complicated and wide topic and deconstructs it for easy comprehension. The book is well organized and entertaining. This would be a wonderful asset to new presiding officers and organization members who wish to actively participate. Highest recommendation!

4.0 out of 5 stars Robert Might Have Been the Dummy October 11, 2012
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Actually, I mean no disrespect to Major Henry M. Robert, nor to the various revisers and editors over the years. However, I have The Modern Edition of Robert's Rules of Order, and it's not always easy to sort through. Mind you, I have tried and have led more than my share of parliamentary procedure meetings based on this book: Robert's Rules of Order: Modern Edition Rev Upd edition by Patnode, Darwin published by Barbour Publishing, Incorporated Hardcover. That's the one I first used and marked up. So, I'm not comparing the Dummies Guide here with one of the newer updates of Robert.

However, the Dummies Guide made the complex processes simpler for me. Partly because of the larger pages, to be certain: the "pocket guides" of RRO are very densely printed, while the extra space in this edition provide room to expand the charts. And to take marginal notes.

The ranking chart for the motions is helpful, because the primary usage of procedure is to keep meetings flowing and fair. If you don't know, this will clear it up.

Alas, the issue that will arise from this book is that many organizations stipulate in their bylaws which version of Robert's Rules of Order will, ahem, rule over the meetings. While the various forms are mostly similar, this Dummies Guide may not exactly represent the edition your organization demands. And while you and most members may find it the most helpful version, all the best in attempting to amend your by-laws to state that "The Latest Edition of Robert's Rules for Dummies" shall govern the meetings.

Summary: good for summary, reference, and most basic uses. Be aware of any differences between this guide and your organization's stated manual.

5.0 out of 5 stars Name says it all December 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Using this book with the full version of RR 11th ed. has made life in a non-profit more managable. A membership organization tends to have individuals who like a title so much they want to abuse it. Abusing a position is bad for moral and membership growth. Knowing the "Rules" gives the membership all the tools they need to work through that.
