5.0 out of 5 stars The best book of its kind.
This is the one indispensable book to have at all of your meetings. In over 20 years of being a parliamentarian and 15 years as a teacher of Rules of Order, I have not found a better reference. If you're just learning, you might want to get a simpler, abridged version as a primer - just to let you know what is most important. It won't be long, however, before you'll...

3.0 out of 5 stars Edward de Levie
This book is not for the faint at heart. This would be the ultimate guide to Robet's Rules, however, it is not designed for use by the casual user. Don't expect to use it as a quick reference for the average person that has general knowledge and limited experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book of its kind., June 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised (9th Edition) (Paperback)
This is the one indispensable book to have at all of your meetings. In over 20 years of being a parliamentarian and 15 years as a teacher of Rules of Order, I have not found a better reference. If you're just learning, you might want to get a simpler, abridged version as a primer - just to let you know what is most important. It won't be long, however, before you'll want this book to use as a real tool to help meetings run more efficiently, in a shorter period of time and with a minimum of disagreements. It will also help you with those "problem" people at meetings. If you don't know Rules of Order you're at the mercy of those who do, or more often, those who pretend to.

5.0 out of 5 stars recognized as the current and official edition, August 22, 1998
By
This review is from: Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised (9th Edition) (Paperback)
Question: Which edition of Robert's Rules is official? Aren't they all the same? Which one do professional parliamentarians refer to? Answer: The National Association of Parliamentarians, and the American Institute of Parliamentarians, only recognize one book as the current official parliamentary authority: Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised [2000 tenth edition, Perseus] Everything else is old, or a variation. The bible of parliamentary law, it is this edition that your bylaws probably mentions, not the 1876 original text, like some publishers are selling. Be forewarned, it is literally a book of rules, and not easily absorbed. -- You may have to learn what's practical for your average meeting by a simpler beginners book. If you want simple, go elsewhere; if you want complete, this is it. No other book is ADDING things to Henry M. Robert's original classifications & rankings (it's 700+ pages!), only shortening & simplifying & rephrasing.

The physical properties of the book make it difficult to handle as it is small and quite thick and the print is quite small. In all likelyhood, the binding will give out quickly with moderate use.

While all the information is there you would have to be an expert to utilize it properly. Save this for a true Parliamentarian or a student studying Parliamentary procedure

5.0 out of 5 stars THE guide to Parliamentary Procedure, December 17, 2000
This review is from: Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised (9th Edition) (Paperback)
This is an absolutely essential guide to running a meeting. Every presiding officer should have a copy available, and every member of a deliberative body should take some time to read up on it. Yes, it's thick, but there's a good reason for that--it covers everything. I have yet to have a question that this book could not answer definitively for me. Don't settle for a "watered down" verson of this book as your reference. Beginners probably shouldn't start with this book, but after having a basic introduction they should dive in head first. Even if you can't use it fast enough to raise a Point of Order at a meeting, use it after meetings to review things that seemed a little fishy or roughed over. You can then go into the next meeting sure that you know how to handle the situtation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Robert's Rules of Order Meet an unruly fraternity., April 1, 1998
This review is from: Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised (9th Edition) (Paperback)
That's correct! Time after time I had attended my weekly fraternity meetings only to leave realizing that nothing had been accomplished. Their were too many opinions, and too little time to hear everyone without order. This led me to one of my professors who suggested I purchase a copy of the the nearly-ancient "Robert's Rules of Order". Upon completion I began to instill the timeless routines outlined in this classic. And before I knew it we were operating like the British Parliament. Surprisingly, this text was a very easy read and it's outline for conduct was convincingly effective. I must recommend to all of you who find yourselves immersed in chaos.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Bible of Parliamentary Procedure, June 29, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised (9th Edition) (Paperback)
An excellent reference book, but not designed as a tutorial. If you want to look up parliamentary procedure, RONR is the place. If you want to study it, keep this book by your side, but read something else.
