Simple and Satisfying., August 24, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Robin Hood: Defender of the Crown (CD-ROM)
I played the game and loved it. The previous reviewer is correct in saying that it is similar to the 1980s version, but thats sort of the point. It was intended to be a remake for cult-followers of the earlier game.
The game is incredibly simple and might get boring if you play too much for too long. I play a little every now and then when I need something to do and am always entertained by it.
Particularly good is the dialogue. The voice acting is great, the cut scenes are entertaining and the dialogue is well written and witty.
The environment is also well designed. The artists did a great job and you'll feel at home in the lush green forests of sherwood. Although, the game is from 2003 so don't expect AMAZING graphics.
The storyline is also fun to follow, but dont expect TOO much originality, as it is of course based on the standard story of Robin Hood. The only real difference is that the game doesn't end at the defeat of the Sheriff of Nottingham, but rather is then opened up to the prospect of Robin raising an army to take back England, county by county!
Its somewhat "non-linear" in that you choose what to do each day. You can ambush caravans on the road, raid an enemy keep, raise a small army and take over a county or send your campaigning army to attack an enemy army in a pitched battle (or seige their castle with a catapult). All of these actions result in more money, which buys more troops and better types of them. More troops opens the way for attacks on bigger armies. The simplicity of it is what made it so enjoyable, and often addictive, for me.
Before buying the game I searched the internet for gameplay videos and was successful in finding several. I would advise a simple search for "Robin Hood Defender of the Crown Gameplay Video" before buying the game.
Also, several sites have a demo that can be downloaded. Be sure to try it out first!
Again, simple and fun, great writing, voice acting and cut scenes, visually pleasing too.
I Highly recommend.

same, old boring plot that the first version back in the 80's had -- they add new 3d-ish graphics and a wee bit more detail to the game and re-release it. there are plenty of free games that do a whole lot better than this puppy..
