From the Manufacturer

In Robin Hood - The Legend of Sherwood you get to take part in one of the oldest and still most popular stories of all. Only a hair’s breadth from the action, you share in all the excitement and adventures of your heroes: Robin Hood, Little John, Will Scarlet, Stutely the Owl, Friar Tuck and the lovely Lady Marian.

You can penetrate the mighty walls of Nottingham Castle, York, Leicester, Derby and Lincoln, and attack heavily guarded convoys in Sherwood Forest. The Prince’s lightly-armed guardsmen and heavily armored knights will challenge you to a duel on staircases lit by flaming torches. Or they might try and fool you with beer, hornets’ nests or a well-aimed money-pouch.

Whenever you want, you can go to the outlaws’ camp and practice the basic and advanced game functions; whether hand-to-hand combat with swords or staffs, target practice with the bow or the skilful use of the many implements Robin’s followers have at their disposal.

Easy mouse control and a system of icons you can understand intuitively will aid both beginners and experts in getting into the game quickly and helping you towards your first successful results. Movements and battles can be controlled problem-free using the mouse. The Robin Hood - The Legend Of Sherwood battle system enables you to have exciting duels with swords, staffs and other typical mediaeval weapons.

But in the end it is having the right tactics which decides on victory or defeat. Whether you sneak into a castle and avoid the sentries or whether you take the direct route with sword and bow, is up to you. For example you can use the reduced visibility during the hours of darkness to your advantage. Or you can deploy the numerous abilities and special objects your men have, in order to distract the Prince’s henchmen. Or then again you could try to fight your way through to your goal using well-aimed bowshots and skillfully deployed weapons. A lot of different possibilities present themselves; you just need to use them wisely.

4.0 out of 5 stars YALORH (yet another legend of robin hood), January 29, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Robin Hood: The Legend Of Sherwood (CD-ROM)
This is a really well done game for the PC that requires very little hi-performance hardware, yet looks beautiful and performs its functions with little or no lag on low speed pentiums. Some people on the various forums have reported system hangs and crashes. I have had only one 'hang' at the very end of the game, but it has not repeated after replaying the game twice. Of course, Robin Hood IS just a legend, so pinning the authors down on errors in the games history elements isn't really relevent, however they begin their manual with the 'real-life beginnings' of Robin Hood, which have some mistakes. They claim King Richard left his brother John in charge of England when he left for the crusades, he in fact made his brother John swear he would not even enter England until Richard returned. They have William Longchamp listed as Prince John's right-hand man, when he was the one King Richard left in charge of England to make sure John stayed out of England.

If you can get by the historical anomalies though, its a very entertaining game that can be very challenging, or very easy to play depending on the difficulty level selected. There are a number of artifacts to collect, and if you get them all, there is a surprise at the end of the game, but I won't spoil it here.

There are 17 missions in all, with 5 castle maps and 3 sherwood forest maps. It rewards the player for NOT killing enemies, but either knocking them out or going around them. Something unique in the world of PC games these days. There is not a lot of re-playability to this game, there are a finite number of artifacts and once you get through the missions they can become repetative (especially the sherwood forest missions), but the castle missions make up for them, the artwork is excellent even though you are limited to a 2D environment.

Overall this is a lot of fun to play, but has some limitations that can be frustrating at times, so I gave it 4 stars.

Robin Hood is a one or more, tactical squad based game. You start the game as Robin who just returned from the war, expecting to find his land back. What he discovered was that his dad had died, and the Sheriff of Nottingham is running loose, taking advantage of the people right and left.

You start the game by yourself, but as the game progresses you'll get additional people in your group, like Will Scarlet, Friar Tuck, John, Maid Marian, etc. You then get to use them in each mission to accomplish each mission's objective.

If you've ever played Fallout Tactics or Commandos, you'll feel right at home here. It also has some RPG/Strategy element of Freedom Force as well. You get to use Stealth and Cunning with some fights as well, starting from archery to sword fightings. My favorite part is when I am standing on a rooftop and shoot arrows down at the Sheriff's people - really cool!

Overall, a five out of five. Try it out - you're not going to regret it!

This is one of those games where in the end you wish it had just a few more levels.

This game is pretty unusual in its gameplay. At first, it just seems frustratingly difficult, but once you get through the first level and understand what this game is all about, it is very entertaining. The story of course is well known, so you won't be overly surprised in the end. However, I am very pleased with how the story is integrated.

Unfortunately, the game gets a bit repetitive, and I found myself wishing the game would force me to use different characters for different missions.

If I had to rate this game with a percentage like many magazines do, I would probably rate it somewhere around 85%. However, I did decide to give it 5 stars here. Not because the game is the best game I ever played, but because I want to give this game a 100% buy recommendation.
