Editorial Reviews

Review

The emotionally perceptive plot is creatively built around the fascinating details of horses, which gives the story an additional layer of interest. The characters are shown grooming, riding and showing horses, all of which actively engages the minds of readers. This information is presented in a practical, down-to-earth manner, as it both instructs and inspires. It was wonderfully refreshing to see the young people in the book showing tender care to these magnificent animals. The author is to be commended for writing a story that captivates readers with an exciting adventure while appealing to both their emotions and intellect. --Curled up with a Good Kid's Book

This mid-grade young ladies' horse novel uses a mixture of horse and human personality types to tell the story of Karen, a girl who is badly injured by an uncontrollable horse that runs away and throws her off in the path of a car. The rest of the story chronicles how through the help of parents, true friends, and a lovable horse she eventually regains her confidence and love of riding. The author uses just the right amount of horse terms and horse events without becoming too technical. As the characters go about their interactions with their horses, the reader's own equine education is reinforced by the characters' actions and their horses' responses. She uses plenty of conflict on many levels and a string of obstacles and the characters' solutions to craft a very interesting story with a quick pace. We rated this book five hearts. --Bob Spear, Heartland Reviews

Robin is a great book for both girls and boys. In a nutshell, it's about a young rider who has a terrible riding accident and the friends and special horse who help her overcome her fears. We love the way it accurately portrays the responsibilities involved in caring for a horse, as well as the lessons we all learn in life with making not so right choices, and learning from our mistakes. Our Family Testers found the book to be a wonderful display of excellent educational values...should be in all libraries and homes. --Jodie Lynn, CEO of Parent to Parent

More About the Author

Award-winning author Ellen Feld began writing about horses more than twenty years ago. Her first writing jobs were for horse magazines. At first, she wrote for small, regional publications, but within a few short years her work began to appear regularly in large, national publications. Her articles have appeared in publications such as The Morgan Horse, Stable Management, Equestrian, Young Rider, Just About Horses, Horsemen's Yankee Pedlar, Tri-State Horse, and The Appaloosa Journal.

One day, back in 2001, while waiting for her next assignment to come in, Ms. Feld wrote a short story about a Morgan Horse. Several of her friends encouraged her to expand on the story and try writing a book. That short story became the first chapter of "Blackjack: Dreaming of a Morgan Horse." The book went on to win a coveted 'Children's Choices' award, co-sponsored by The International Reading Association and The Children's Book Council. The book was then picked up by an international toy company and packaged with a toy horse made to resemble Blackjack, the star of the series. Blackjack continues to sell well and to date has sold over 30,000 copies.

Ms. Feld continues to write horse stories for children. She has published seven books, with two more due out in late 2012. She lives in Massachusetts with her husband, two children, ten horses, and assorted pets.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gotta love Robin the Morgan Horse!, March 29, 2006
This review is from: Robin: The Lovable Morgan Horse (Morgan Horse Series) (The Morgan Horse Series) (Paperback)
Ellen Feld zooms me back to my childhood and memories of riding with my friends. Yep, we did some crazy things with our horses...and so many times it was a result of peer pressure. Our horses, like the Morgan horse Robin, seemed to know better and were there to help teach us so many valuable lessons. Ellen's story takes hold of this reality and addresses it with a mature hand and detail that floods the senses with the smell of horses and leather, the sounds of hoofbeats and laughter, the sight of green grass and wonderful Morgan horseflesh, the feel of the reins and a freshly-curried coat, and the sheer bliss of spending time with horses and friends. I have to wait (somewhat impatiently) while my son finishes each new book that Ellen writes!

Once again Ellen is right on the mark when it comes to a believable story with the delicious overtones of whimsy and fantasy that horses conjure up in all of us. All of Ellen's books are worthy additions to any library of children's classics, and are a recommended read for all ages and genders. We await more additions to the trusty list!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just keeps getting better, March 29, 2006
This review is from: Robin: The Lovable Morgan Horse (Morgan Horse Series) (The Morgan Horse Series) (Paperback)
As an adult Morgan horse owner I found myself transported back to the days of my youth when every climb on a horse was an adventure. Ellen Feld has captured that youthful pleasure in knowing and having a horse friend. A great book for youngsters but just as enjoyable for us older horse crazy girls.
