4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised
A friend gave this book to my 7 year old second grader. Her son had liked it. I was initially hesitant to read an abridged version of a classic because I'd seen such books that didn't seem very well done. My son and I both loved this version. The adapter did an excellent job. I read most of it to him but it was at a level that he could read it himself too.

3.0 out of 5 stars My review of robinson crusoe
Daniel Defoe is a great auther and is veary good at making the reader see the image the he is discribing to the reader. This Adventure story of a shipwrecked sailer, was marooned on a deserted island to save himself from the terrible death of drowning in the water like all his shipmates. He lives on the islands for over 30 years. Living off the livestock and anything...

4.0 out of 5 stars My review, February 25, 2007
This review is from: Robinson Crusoe Retold From Daniel Dafoe (Scholastic Junior Classics) (Paperback)
I am Bobby Rodriguez, a 6th grader. I am a student at Stanley British Primary School. For my book report I chose to read Robinson Crusoe. It is a captivating book about a boat that gets caught in a bad storm and everyone dies except Robinson and he swims to land. I really enjoyed reading this novel.

The Book Robinson Crusoe is an adventure book. It is about a little ship that only had about 30 people on it. The crew got stuck in a big storm. It was a hurricane. They stayed under the cabin for 12 day's and 12 nights. Those 12-days and 12 nights it rained the whole time they were under in the ships cabin. They finally got out and saw land. They thought the ship in minutes was going to timber and it was still raining. Two men fell over board. So the crew hopped on the little boats and tried to get to land. Everyone died expect Robinson. He made to land. He was going to face a lot of problems, for example he had no food, he no weapons to hunt, he had no dry clothes and he had no place to sleep. So Robinson was pretty much shipwrecked on a deserted island. Robinson was going to learn to stay alive on a dangerous land. He must hunt, build shelter, and make this island his home. And his question is will he ever get home? That next day Robinson had to try to get back to the ship so he could get supplies to stay an alive. When he went back he found two cats that were still alive on the boat, he got food, guns and ammo. To get all of his supplies to the island he made a raft, using branches and rope. After time he made a house in a cave and knew where to get food and where to hunt. He was actually enjoying him self on the island. Robinson thought he was the only living soul on the island until one day when he saw some Native Americans. He didn't talk to them because he was an afraid they would kill him. In fact, he hid from them. After 15 years, finally they found him, but Robinson didn't want to leave he was really enjoying him self there. That is my summary of Robinson Crusoe.

I thought Daniel Defoe was a pretty good author, but not the best. The reason I say this is because I didn't think his descriptions were that detailed I had a hard time picturing the island and setting in my head. I thought in the book there was really no hard word for me. Next time I should choose a more challenging book. I thought the writer's style of sentence's were really good, in my opinion because he mixed it up with short, choppy and long sentences. I really enjoy a book were an author does this, it makes it more in enjoyable for the reader. I like how the author never stays on one topic for too long and jumps around on the topics. I was disappointed that he didn't leave the island. I thought as I read it that he wanted to leave. I felt confused. So I really enjoyed this, but I didn't really like the ending. Overall, this is one of my favorite books and it is a classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Adventure for all Ages, November 6, 2007

This review is from: Robinson Crusoe Retold From Daniel Dafoe (Scholastic Junior Classics) (Paperback)

There are a lot of psychological and social theories about "Robinson Crusoe," but I just take it as a grand adventure. I loved all the details of how he survived after being shipwrecked on that island. Just remember that it was written in the seventeenth century so you have to get used to writing.

I have a warm place in my heart for Robinson Crusoe. Some fifty years ago in the second grade, my teacher read it to our class. Decades later, I told my wife about it, but she said that it was impossible. Robinson Crusoe is too difficult for a teacher to read to second graders.

Well, several years went by, and I was proved right. In a used bookstore, I bought a copy of "The Story of Robinson Crusoe in words of One Syllable," with "Colored Illustrations." The book was published in about 1900, and when my teacher read it to her class, the book was over fifty years old.

Since then I have collected paperback editions of "Robinson Crusoe" for their neat covers, and this one is really nice.

If you like shipwrecked-on-an-island stories, read Richard Laymon's "Island." It's a page-turner of a modern murder mystery.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's A Review Just For You, February 25, 2007
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Robinson Crusoe Retold From Daniel Dafoe (Scholastic Junior Classics) (Paperback)
The orignial author of Robison crusoe Daniel Defoe who wrote over 370 books but this was his most popular. His father was a butcher and he changed his name from foe to Defoe to try and get more popularity. Robinson Crusoe was written in 1719 and has been told in many different stories. He also wrote a follow up on Robison Crusoe called The Father Adventures of Robison Crusoe which was not as popular. The retold book I read was written by Edward W. Dolch, Marguerite P. Dolch and Beulah F. Jackson.

Robison Crusoe is about a man who gets stuck on an island. After a horrible boat wreck and how he survives for so many years. One day he find a man in trouble and helps him get out of trouble and they become great friends. After so many years he and his friend fight men for this boat. The story that the author is trying to say in the book is how a person can survive for so many years with nothing but a few guns a dog some cats and a little food. He survives by building a house hunting for food growing crops building bowls pates to eat out from. It took the author so many months to right the book because he had to think of so many strange possibilities for Robison Crousoe to survive and all the weird things that happened to him and she had to right the book. This book is all about one mans life and how he survives and the adventure he has to take. My favorite quote in the book was to his cannibal friend and he said "don't eat people .Are not for eating. One other quote I liked was "Oh money what good are you? I can not eat you. You can not keep me warm. You are no good at all and why that quote is so good because pretty much money is are life and it helps us in every way and it does not do any thing to help him. The parts the author did a good job with were his description of Robison Crouso's things he makes and how he looks but the parts the author did a poor job on was is the start of book when he is in the boat. From hearing all this I make you feel how bad it was sitting on an island with no one for 27 years.

The authors Edward and Marguerite Dolch retold this story that was first written by Daniel Defoe. They shortened his book a lot and left out a few parts. The authors who wrote this book wrote it and took a lot of time thinking of every thing Robison Crusoe had to battle the and things he made and the things he did. They do a great job doing these things . If were to compare this book to another book like a pirate book I would say that with just Robison Crusoe and a pirate book I would say that this book has just as much action with just this one man and it is exciting.

This abridged version of the timeless classic is a great way to introduce younger readers to great literature!

Also recommended, a modern day Treasure Island caliber adventure called NICK OF TIME by Ted Bell.

My 7 year old loved this shorter version of the classic. He is just getting into chapter books and this was a great read aloud book that we could read together. It kept both his interest and my own through out the story. Maybe when he's older, we'll read the classic together, but for now this is a GREAT book for his age. The other books in this series are also just as good as this one. I recommend them all.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Robinson Crusoe Retold From Daniel Dafoe (Scholastic Junior Classics) (Paperback)
I really don't like reading, but in no doubt this is one the best books that I had ever read!* For me, it's really hard to just set me down with a good book, but with this one, in every part of the book it was thrilling, there amazing things that no other man can do... In books like these, I can keeping reading, and reading, and I just love it!!! In other books I read like this, there's no fighting, and there's lots of other people stuck on and island, but I think robinson Crusoe goes strong, he's all alone, he's on, what I should say his own island he dominates the island. He's practicaly there his whole life!
