A solid little RTS for the DS,

This review is from: Robocalypse (Video Game)
Robocalypse is a quirky little real-time strategy (RTS) title that kind of surprised me. The premise of the game is simple: build an army of robots to fight the enemy army of robots. As far as RTS titles go, this is the cream of the crop for the DS and is the best one on the system. For an on-the-go game, it's a good selection.
Gameplay is different from many RTS titles, but it works well. Unlike most RTS titles, you can't build your buildings just anywhere and are instead limited to specific building points on the map. Also, you only have direct control of your Hero units. Regular soldier units are controlled indirectly by issuing action commands which they usually will follow. I was skeptical of the system at first but was surprised at how well it works. I wouldn't be surprised if other higher profile games steal this idea in the future as an optional control scheme. The Good: - Graphics are solid and look nice. - The game runs very smoothly with no slowdown - Unit movement speed is good but could be speedier. (too many DS RTS attempts have agonizingly slow unit movement speeds) - Unique and functional RTS controls that take full advantage of the touch screen. - Although the storyline is painful, the developers were courteous to poke a lot of fun at themselves. The Bad: - The music in the game is terrible - The sound effects are beyond annoying - The storyline is painful, but humorous in parts. If you want a streamlined, on-the-go RTS experience, Robocalypse is probably the best game you can get at the time of this writing. Just turn the volume of your DS down all the way because that music is horrible.
