Biography

Basil Poledouris was an American film composer whose musical breadth enabled him to write music for films as diverse as Starship Troopers with its 96 piece orchestral setting, to the quiet solo piano work for It's My Party. The score which received the most critical acclaim was his work for Conan The Barbarian.

He started studying the piano when he was seven years old and had intended to become a… Read more in Amazon's Basil Poledouris Store

5.0 out of 5 stars I'd buy THAT for a dollar! (I'd even buy that for twenty!), April 23, 2010
By
This review is from: Robocop (Complete) (Audio CD)
Third time's the charm for RoboCop with the complete score at last on CD. Originally released by Varese Sarabande on CD Robocop Original Motion Picture Soundtrack waaaaay back in 1987 and was then re-released in 2004 Robocop Original Recording Remastered with Extra Tracks with the inclusion of 4 additional brief media cues : "Have A Heart," "OCP Monitors," "Nuke 'Em," and "Big Is Better" which were simply tacked onto the end of the original album. If you missed out on that one like I did, you're in luck because Intrada has finally given Robo a release proper by including all of the music from the two previous releases and the additional unreleased music and remastered and re-arranged the cues into their proper sequencing from the film with an expanded 56:04 runtime.

Beginning with the "Main Title" which runs 8 seconds longer than the Varese release with a longer "Media Break" bridge and is followed with "Have A Heart" from the Jarvik 7 television commercial and the unreleased "OCP Monitors" from Dick Jones' corporate presentation for the future of law enforcement in Delta City. "Twirl" is a brief synthesized cue that introduces us to Officer Alex Murphy as he practices his T.J. Lazer gunfighter move just before "Van Chase" ("Can you fly, Bobby?") as he and Officer Lewis pursue Clarence Boddicker and his thugs to a burned out industrial factory in Old Detroit. "Murphy Dies In O.R." retitled from the original "Murphy's Death" cue followed by "Robo Lives" as Murphy is resurrected as the mechanical cyborg ("Go Robo!") previously unreleased. "Drive Montage" as Robo goes out on patrol ("Oh yeah! Go get 'em, boy!") and "Helpless Woman" ("Let the woman go you are under arrest!") followed by the "Nuke 'Em" commercial jingle. "Murphy's Dream" (a.k.a. "The Dream") precedes "Gas Station Blow-Up" ("You're dead. We killed you.") appeared on the original release as "Directive IV" followed by "Murphy Goes Home" (a.k.a. "Home"). Other cues ported over from the original album "Clarence Frags Bob," "Rock Shop," and "Robo & ED-209 Fight" (a.k.a "Robo Vs. ED-209") remain unchanged. "Robo Drives To Jones" which appeared on the original album as "We Killed You" followed by the properly titled "Directive 4" (a.k.a. "Robo Tips His Hat" on the original album). "Force Shoots Robo" (a.k.a. "Betrayal") as Metro Command is ordered to destroy Murphy in the parking garage and segues into the 6000 SUX commercial extension that appeared on the 2004 release as the 27 second "Big Is Better" which is now titled for the unused elevator music and it's easy to see why it wasn't used in the film upon listening but will satisfy purists who want every second of recorded music. "Care Package" which had been erroneously titled "Drive to Jones' Office" on the first Varese release is from the somber scene with Murphy and Lewis after target practice with baby food. "Looking For Me" (a.k.a. "Showdown") with Clarence Boddicker ("Sayonara, RoboCop!") remains intact from the original album. "Across The Board/End Credits" assembly is presented for the first time with the full end credit music and without the abrupt film edit reprise of the main theme after "Nice shooting, son. What's you're name?" "Murphy," punctuates one of the greatest thematic compositions of late composer Basil Poledouris.

If you're hesitant about pulling the trigger on what might appear to be yet another RoboCop soundtrack release, with only 3000 copies pressed from this complete edition from Intrada which is sure to go out-of-print quickly... go ahead and do it. Dead or alive you're coming with me.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Great Basil Poledouris Robocop Soundtrack, Short But Sweet!, February 5, 2006
By
dv_forever (Michigan, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Robocop [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] (Audio CD)
Ok, so let's get things out of the way, this soundtrack is only 42:20 long. Not much perhaps. Certainly not as long as the famous Conan the Barbarian soundtrack by Poledouris. It's not the composer's fault. In Conan the Barbarian, Poledouris was asked by director John Milius to provide as much music as possible to drive the film, like in Star Wars for instance John Williams had the same task given to him by George Lucas. In Robocop it's different, the film is not driven by the music for the most part, it's not saturating the movie all the time but it comes in during some truly dramatic moments and gives the film so much life and power, taking it to another level. Poledouris is awesome, the Robocop theme is one of the most memorable themes ever written for the movies! No doubt about it.

Most of the tracks here are pretty short with little thematic development but there are some great action cues, like track 2 for instance which becomes very mysterious half way through as Murphy and Lewis hunt the bad guys. The final showdown is intense and the music for the scenes when Robocop visits his old home and later when the police force tries to gun him down in the garage are emotionally powerful. The Robocop theme pops in on several tracks on this CD but for the definitive number, go to track 4, titled 'Rock Shop' and hear that theme in all it's resplendent glory. It correlates to the scene where Robocop destroys that cocaine factory and captures Clarence Boddicker! Some really great stuff to blast up on your stereo!

If you love Poledouris and his work for Robocop, you must also have his Conan the Barbarian soundtrack, make sure it's the original Varese Sarabande CD, expensive but worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Score, February 7, 2004
This review is from: Robocop [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] (Audio CD)
With the monolithical achievement of Conan already behind him, Basil Poledouris served up powerful and emotional score for Robocop. The movie was already great but with such amazing music to stand alongside it how can you NOT get this CD?

With two separate themes, one for Murphy and one for Robocop Poledouris bridges together the score with snazzy synthesizer cues and a large orchestra. My fave track is 'Rock Shop'. Robocop's theme makes its first bombastic appearance here. 'Home' features some very sad cues of strings mixed with synthesizer. It perfectly defines Murphy's pain and longing for his old life. 'Showdown' is just pure action, as Murphy takes down his own assassins Poledouris throws all the themes together for a big send off.

This is big improvement on the old, out of print CD. Varese Sarabande no offers this score with digitally remastered sound (it's great on a home theatre) liner notes and a few extra tracks of TV jingles featured in the movie that were also composed by Basil Poledouris. Any serious collector of film music should by this score.
