A lesson on the dangers of technology, June 18, 2007
The copy I have was printed in England in 1981, so I'm not sure anyone will read this review, but for what it's worth, here goes...
I originally read this book as a younger teen, and found it brilliant. Now, after going from a 580 page book, to one with a mere 128 pages, I find this one incredibly short. Regardless of it's length, however, it is still a strong message - namely the dangers of technology, or more precisely, artificial intelligence.
The story revolves around the Moulton family. The father - Pastor Moulton, who has created his own religion and following, the mother - left to whither away with neglect, as the Pastor believes that prayer, not technology, will save her - and their two children Abi and Hez. Into their household comes Max, a Mark III Robomart robot - the very latest and greatest robot. A short while after his arrival, Abi learns the truth surrounding her mother's sad state of health, and that she would have had 3 older siblings had the Pastor not forbidden medical treatment when they were sick, instructing his wife instead to pray for them.
Abi then decides that it would be best to have her father killed - in her eyes, doing away with a murderer and bringing their mother back to them. Using the Pastor's own words against him (prayers and hymns proclaiming his desire to get his reward in heaven, and be set free from earthly bonds), she convinces Max to help her in her plan.
Little does she realize that Max will turn her plan to his own goals - to stage a robot revolution for world domination. So the stage is set between modern technology and religious zealotry.
As I said, it was brilliant as a young teen, but now that I'm older, it reads more like an over-stretched short story. The characters were good, the premise great, but the ending was rather an anti-climax that made me wonder if I was missing a page or two.
It's a fun book if you get ahold of a copy, but it's not worth hunting down a 2nd hand copy.
