4.0 out of 5 stars Robotech: Invasion
A surprise release at the time, this title covers the Invid invasion period of the Robotech anime series and the deployment of the ground-based Cyclone Veritech light mecha. Allowing freedom to switch between first and third person views on the fly, the game endeavors to present an entertaining shooter experience set accurately within the setting and time frame...

3.0 out of 5 stars Robotech FANS Need Only Apply, October 16, 2004

Not a far reach from Battlecry, this game will only apeal to Robotech guru's. Once again this game is based on a character not from miniseries, but someone who fights along side with them. Without giving too much away, it is similar Battlecry's Jack without the attitude. Your character is silent throughout the game with exection of a few voiceover flashbacks.

The game is meant for fans of the series and not everone will understand what the story is trying to unfold. Fans will know what is going on from the start of the game, but it is disorienting due to the heavy battles that takes place. It is not necessary to follow the the story to play the game. The objectives are available in the pause menu.

Graphically I've seen better and worse. I believe the developers were trying to get away from cel shaded cartoony feel of Battlecry for a more realistic forboding enviroment. If this is what they were trying to do then they suceeded. The game takes a much more serious approach, cel shading would not have fit the mood. Due to the second major attack on earth's surface there isn't much to look at. What enviroment as far as forest and towns are ok. More detail seem to be put into the ships inner structure and you won't see much do to the fact that you'll need night vision scope inside the ships. The lighting effects are ok as well, nothing spectacular but not bad either. Overall graghics are above mediocracy but not by much.

The music fits the mood as well, very little upbeat toons as the developers once again try to maintain a serious tone thoughout the game. The voice acting is not horrid as some would lead you to believe, if anything it's done better than most due to the actors not over or under acting. No character sounds out of place as far as emotion or general conversation is involved. The gun firing and explosions all sound good as well. Once again just above average in sound department. Though the music is enjoyable for the most.

Gameplay is a mixed bag. Controls are easy to pick up on. Targeting is easy for protoculture based enemies with a lock on feature. Human enemies will be a little more difficult because you are forced to line up the shot. The camera allows switching from first to third with ease. First person allows for better targeting, third person for melee or up close encounters. The camera can and will put you in the first person if the area is small and in the middle of battle can be annoying. Closed area it is necessary to see behind your character and that problem will come up more than once. The bike is used mainly for transportation and is hardly used for battle. It is a little difficult to control at times due to the rough terain as well. Guardian mode allows boost straffing in all directions. Flight is not possible. Boost jumping allows for an extra foot or so of jumping height. Fighting the enemy runs smoothly, dodging shots and auto target feature makes this a better than average shooter. Other first person shooters could take lesson with the auto targeting system used here. No slow down present even with the screen littered with Invid troopers.

Robotech Invasion is not an underachieved game, but does not go out it's way to overachieve either. Die hard fans of Robotech will enjoy this game as I do, but everyone else may see this as just another shooter with transforming mecha gimick. The auto target feature stands out as this games stong point. It's lack of a broader appeal will hurt sales to non-fans of the cartoon.

3.0 out of 5 stars ROBOTECH: Invasion...Rent before you regret!, October 16, 2004
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Robotech: Invasion (Video Game)
ROBOTECH: Invasion is a far shot from living up to the expectation of ROBOTECH Fans everywhere. ROBOTECH: Battle Cry was more to speed in keeping with the anime than Invasion.
The Story behind Invasion, the Invid, a spacefaring race that resembels slugs, have invading earth. You, a member of the Mars Division of the ROBOTECH Reclamation Forces, have to get to Reflex Point, Invid Main Base, and destroy it.
Your primary vehicle is the CYCLONE, a transformable motorcycle (Bike Mode) and power armor (Soldier Mode). You can switch between modes only in open areas. So most of the game is done in soldier.
As the story unfolds there are a few moment of "flashback" voices. These voices are both Human and Invid. You also play thru as two diferent characters. during the course there are no wrong decissions.
As a Fan of the original ROBOTECH ANIME's I was highly disapointed. I rented the game and before the return date, 5 days later, I bought my own copy and beat it shortly after. On an average of 1-2 hours a night and 6 on the weekend I accumilated around 10 hours and beat the game.
Overall I didnt find the game all that fun. I've had it for less than a week, and Im heading to BABBAGE's for a trade

If I wasn't a Robotech fan, I would find this game rather boring. But, as a fan, it held my interest. It was much the same thing over and over again. I wish they could've varied the gameplay a little bit.

3.0 out of 5 stars Passable FPS with Robotech elements, November 29, 2005
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Robotech: Invasion (Video Game)
This is a game which, if not for the Robotech name, I would not have bought. The game is a first person shooter which has nothing to distinguish it from the other games in the genre than the Robotech name/story line and the excellently rendered Invid enemies.

Those enemies are without a doubt the highpoint of the game. Every class of Invid is faithfully created, from scouts and enforcers to troopers. Also the landscapes and background were well done. The ruined cities, Invid hives and crashed ships really add to the environment. Voice acting was good, the Regiss really sounded like the original voice actress.

My complaints...

1. For some reason the game totally ignores the music from the series and chooses to use some scifi-esque music through the game. Why not use the music that fans of the show, presumably your target market, would prefer.

2. Why limit when the player can change modes. One of the true strengths of Robotech Battlecry was the ability to switch modes at the players whim.

3. Why no veritechs? I'm sure most players would have loved a mission or three which involved veritechs.

4. The Invid were too easy to kill. If i remember right a Cyclone would have a pretty tough time in a 1-1 fight with an Invid Trooper. They go down far too easily in this game.

5. Why not have the main character speak in game more often. You have the voice actor from the original series, use him.

6. I would have liked to have seen some interplay with the main characters of the show like we had in Battlecry.

7. Movement seemed clunky and jumpy. The player is often unable to turn to aim quickly enough to engage enemies.

All in all a passable game. At its current price (under $10) its probably worth it for the someone who loves the series, but it doesn't stand up on its own. Without the Robotech elements I would have given this game 2 stars. Another example of a licensed game falling short of hopes and expectations.

4.0 out of 5 stars Robotech: Invasion, April 24, 2010

A surprise release at the time, this title covers the Invid invasion period of the Robotech anime series and the deployment of the ground-based Cyclone Veritech light mecha. Allowing freedom to switch between first and third person views on the fly, the game endeavors to present an entertaining shooter experience set accurately within the setting and time frame.
The game performs well from a mechanical standpoint. The transformation ability is straightforward, a single button press swaps from cycle mode to cyclone armor mode, and swapping weapons is similarly done. Though the weapon selection can at times be somewhat limited, the weapons available are specific to the setting, something fans of the series are likely to appreciate. The game play is fairly straightforward most of the time, consisting of missions ranging between retrieving specific parts to clearing enemy (whether Invid or human scavengers and raiders) presence from mission objective areas. The ability to change to the cycle mode is amusing and useful once the controls are gotten used to, making some long trips much quicker. However, the cycle cannot be used in interior areas.
Overall, as a fan of the series, I found this game to be engaging and worth owning and as a fan of older run and gun shooters, it also holds up fairly.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgic First Person Shooter, October 28, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Robotech: Invasion (Video Game)
Not the most extravagant first person shooter... But for a fan of the Robotech series, looking for nostalgic fun, I find the game quite enjoyable. Yes, there are games with better graphics, but the general action and story I think are more than acceptable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really Good, for What it Is, July 10, 2005
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Robotech: Invasion (Video Game)
I grew up reading the Jack McKinny books, so my review may be a little biased.

This game really captures the feel of a planet that's been turned into a wasteland, and a war that's gone on for too long. I think the designers were right to stay away from the cartoony feel of Battlecry.

There's a lot of great details to this game. There are a lot of different terrain types, such as ruined highways, abandoned monorails, alien hives, mountains and forests, and wrecked cities.

The gameplay is awesome, and defintely captures the feel of a guerilla-warfare situation. You use the motorcycle relatively frequently, and the marksman element to the gameplay definitely goes with the whole david-and-goliath feel.

Drawbacks? The game is too short, for all the different levels there are, it goes too quickly. It would be nice if there had been more, even if it was just repeating the same levels with different scenarios or characters.

Also, there are a few times when the game is hard simply because it is not really clear what you are supposed to do next. There are a few "escape" levels where you can't really see where you are going at certain spots.

If this game had a sequel, I would get it in a heartbeat.

4.0 out of 5 stars This Game, January 28, 2008
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Robotech: Invasion (Video Game)
I have played a lot of games. Sometimes more than I can count. I have seen many shooter games in the stores. A lot of shooters are mindless killing without purpose or good design. This game has a story line. Now, I am not a Robotech Fan. I have never seen the show or played any of the other games. But I will tell you this. I have played this game and beat it in less than six hours. It was... fun. I liked the dark "mysterious" game play. I liked the cyclones. But the one thing that sparked my interest was imagination. I mean look at the invid. They are weird looking. Actually I liked the way they looked and fought. The enemies were a little easier than I liked, however I was able to take them out in a few easy eye shots. Any idiot who just sprays out ammunition is ,of course, going to run out of ammo. I will tell you this, you do not need anything except for the gallant. The invid leave behind ammunition for this weapon its that simple. The graphics were medium. The gameplay was good. The continuous flashbacks and comlink communications made me keep playing to find out what would happen next. Overall I would say it is a great game. I don't think a game needs killer graphics or amazing super combos or mega ammunition scattered around. I think a game needs to be challenging and fun. And I also think that anybody that needs stupid cheat codes or make the game too easy should grow up!!

I'm not sure about the other reviews for this game, but I found it pretty satisfying. It's a 1st/3rd person (switchable) shooter set in the world of Robotech. An admirable attempt has been made at creating a "you are not fighting alone" feel ala "Call Of Duty". Very nice in-engine cut-scenes further the story as you progress throughout the game. The fighting can get pretty intense and confusing at times, and the color palette doesn't always lend itself to easily seeing all the action, but this is still a solid game that should satisfy Robotech fans and action fans alike.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible, December 19, 2005

This review is from: Robotech: Invasion (Video Game)
This game is terrible, Robotech Battlecry was a better game than this. The visual quality was bad, the gameplay was uninspiring. I am a big Robotech Fan, watched it as a kid on TV, I own the TV series but this game doesn't live up to it. Its incredibly boring. If you are looking for a shooter move onto to anything else. If you want a Robotech Game buy Battlecry. Or watch the shows and use your imagination! You'd probably have a better time.
