Worried about missing calls while you're online? Let that one go: a U.S. Robotics feature called Internet Call Notification (ICN) lets you screen incoming calls so you can take the important ones.
Even better, Modem on Hold lets you take calls while online without dropping your Internet connection--there's no need for a second phone line.
The modem's ControlCenter lets you customize your upload and download speeds--choose to surf the Web at top speed or to send e-mail attachments faster. Built-in line-probing technology helps you stay connected even under the worst line conditions, and the modem is software-upgradeable, too, so you can download new features and enhancements as they become available.
Included software turns your computer into a feature-rich fax machine--send faxes from any Windows application and receive incoming faxes at any time. The software also supports delayed and broadcast faxing.
The modem is compatible with Windows XP, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows ME, Windows 98, Windows 95, Windows 3.1, Linux, and DOS.
What's in the Box
U.S. Robotics 56K Faxmodem, AC power adapter, RJ-11 phone cord (7 feet), quick-installation guide, installation CD-ROM.
Note: call waiting and Caller ID require service from your local phone company.

Such a thing as a reverse Pollyanna?,

This review is from: US Robotics V.92 External 56K Faxmodem USR5686E (Personal Computers)
You know, I look at these other reviews and can't understand them. I have used US Robotics modems since they came out with the speedy 2400 bps model back in 80-something. Never had any complaints. The only reason I ever replaced one was more speed! The first exception was the 56K one I bought on ebay 5 years ago. Paid $25 for it and it worked perfectly until 1/22/2006. For some reason, it couldn't pick up the phone. Enter Amazon and this modem. I ordered it at 4 PM CST on 1/23 and it was here by noon on 1/24. I unplugged the old modem and just put the same cables into the new one. First dial out didn't connect but have had five now that did (as of midnight). No connections at less than 40K and one at 48K! First time I ever hit that speed in all my years of dial-up.
I don't know how the software drivers in this package are but I can testify to the ones I have been using for 3 years. It has been my experience with USR that you must be positive which modem you actually have and get the right drivers. They used to have a tool that you download that would tell you what drivers you needed. I find it hard to believe that the other four reviews here had such uniformly bad experiences. I would not use a dial up modem from any other company. I live well out in a rural area of Louisiana and will not have a faster way of accessing the Internet anytime soon. I did not hesitate to buy this modem. Your milage may vary.

TELEPHONE SERVICE IS COSTLY,
By Larry J Williamson (Carmichael, California United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: US Robotics V.92 External 56K Faxmodem USR5686E (Personal Computers)
After working for a year, the synchronization failed at the end of the connection procedure. In order to get service, you must phone up and get a number to send it in. But they don't want youto send it in. They charge you $8.00 for the call, and will refund it if they decide you shouls send it in. Well, first of all , they give you a 801 phone number to Salt Lake City. I thought this was toll free, like an 800 number. So I just used regular service instaed of a 5 cents a minute service. My phone call ended up costing 9.60 for 28 minutes plus the 8.00 USR charge. What did they do for me. They stepped me through the procedure to add at dialup an external "key" that I learned later through internet search that turns off the V92 technology. Anyhow, after setting this key for the modem, it was slow, slow. I ended up going back to my old 28-33K US Robotics that i bought in 1996. Don't bother with US Robotics Get a ZOOM 56K modem. After 3 1/2 years My ZOOM on my other computer is functioning well; although the spring on the switch is tempermental. At least it will last 4 years - looks like. For those that made a mistake, the Setting is "&f1s32=96". This turns off V92. DON'T BUY - Their warranty is a ripoff.

Good Modem,
This review is from: US Robotics V.92 External 56K Faxmodem USR5686E (Personal Computers)
I have used this model modem for years with access control systems and it has always worked great. I am surprised to read so many bad reviews about this modem on here. I have purchased and used at least 6 of them over the years and have not had a problem or issue with any one of them. I would recommend this product to anyone who needs a modem but with high speed internet who uses modems anyways?? Back in the 90s I always used USR modems and they worked great and this modem lives up to that.
