Book Description

8 and up3 and up
The word 'robot' may remind us of science fiction, but robots today are a science fact. Their role in our lives is growing all the time. The authors of the acclaimed and bestselling Fantastic Feats and Failures and Science Detectives present a detailed look at robots yesterday, today and in the future. See robots at work (and play) in homes, factories, wrestling rings, sewers, hospitals, oceans and outer space. Learn about their many different shapes, sizes and uses and meet robots who do dangerous and dirty jobs, help perform surgery, look like us, show emotion like us and much more. Did you know? In the 1700s, a Swiss craftsman and his son built a mechanical boy who could write short messages. Robo soccer is the most popular robotic sport. Robopets can purr, sleep, play games and even tell jokes. The Amphibot can swim by snaking its body back and forth, then hit the shore and start walking. The humanlike robot ASIMO can balance on one foot while kicking a soccer ball.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

This title, produced in conjunction with Yes magazine, introduces robots that work (defusing bombs, assembling cars, assisting surgeons, exploring Mars) and play (riding camels, kicking soccer balls). The short chapters are divided into three categories: The World of Robots, which gives an overview and a history of the industry; Robots at Work; and the Robotic Future. Each section is packed with fascinating information, entertaining cartoon graphics, and numerous full-color photographs. The text is hip and accessible; robots are often referred to as ’bots, for example. Browsers will be drawn to the amazing photographs of robots in action across the Earth and in space, as well as images of famous robots from the big screen, such as R2-D2 from Star Wars, Sonny from I, Robot, and Rodney from Robots. Sidebars on colored backgrounds enhance the text. A glossary and index conclude this well-organized and engaging text on a popular topic. Grades 3-7. --Shauna Yusko

5.0 out of 5 stars In this AMAZING book we get a look at all kinds of robots!, August 8, 2009
This review is from: Robots: From Everyday to Out of This World (Hardcover)
Just a few short years ago many people thought that robots were a bit far fetched and R2-D2 and his pal C-3PO were only fantasy bots to be found in movies. If you've ever been lucky enough to see the Country Bear Jamboree in the Magic Kingdom, you've seen an animatronic character. If you've seen an iRobot Roomba magically vacuuming a room, you've seen a robot in action. In the 1400s Leonardo da Vinci drew up plans for a "robot-knight" that could be "run by pulleys, wooden disks and gears." At that time his peers must have thought he was crazy, but when we look at present day robotics we can only imagine what the future will bring.

In this AMAZING book we get a look at all kinds of robots. We learn about the basic components a robot is made up of, how they are powered, how they gather information and how they move. You will meet working robots, Mini-Andros the bomb-defusing hazbot, MAKRO the sewer system worker, robot heroes who worked at the World Trade Center (VGTV, Microtrac and iRobot Packbot), the da Vinci Surgical System, TUG the "robotic courier used in hospitals," Noelle, the "pregnant robot" who helps medical students learn to deliver babies, ROPOS the undersea robot who works on scientific expeditions, space `bots, Robonaut the robot-astronaut, the Canadarm and many, many more bots!

This is a book that any bot lover will grab for, read and browse for hours. The text is very clear and exciting to read and the stunning scientific photographs (drawn from professional and scientific organizations) and informative sidebars bring this book together superbly. The range of robots is amazing and the reader can look at anything from toy robots to those that help people expand the quality of their lives to those that advance scientific research. In the back of the book is a glossary and an excellent index. Do you know what a nanobot is? If not, you might just want to read this book!

I won't say that it's a bad book, just not good enough to justify owning. Borrow this one from the Library.
