I'm not a huge short story reader, but when I saw this collection at the library, I decided to check it out because it had one of my favorite authors, Cory Doctorow in it.

I'm about halfway through, and very much enjoying the stories. Rising Waters was particularly good, a story about a military project that speed-raises AI one after another, until it gets what it wants. The Cory Doctorow story I, Robot is excellent.

There's a lot of much older fiction about artificial intelligence and robots, and it's nice to see a collection of all current works by varying authors to see what the current themes are. If you enjoyed Ted Chiang's The Lifecycle of Software Objects, I think you'll also enjoy this collection.

Pretty good. A wide-ranging exploration of the possibilities of AI, from the galaxy-spanning to the personal with engaging, (seemingly) scientific accuracy throughout.

Compilation of stories by different authors that describe a world after humans are gone. Much different than the usual robot/AI scenarios where they are dealing with humans in the present. I think the premise is great and it was an amazing read. Highly recommended!

Given the awards that many of the authors have received, I was expecting something wonderful when I bought this anthology. Sadly, most of the stories show a lack of craftsmanship and/or an unclear story arc. A lot of them have "ambiguous" endings that look more like the author didn't know where to go with the story -- an attempt by the author to cover up a lack of clarity by being "artsy." There are bits and pieces of occasional brilliance, but nothing worth slogging through the entire volume to find. Even the high point of this collection, "Silently and Very Fast" by Catherynne M. Valente, could have used a bit of editing.
