5.0 out of 5 stars Some tracks censored
This is a totally rad album. However, as sold by Amazon, at least two of the tracks in MP3 format are censored.

1) The censoring is glaringly obvious in "Should Have Known", which completely guts the song. The f-word is muted a total of 8 times, in the middle of each chorus. I've heard the original. This ain't it.

2) "Curriculum Vitae" also has...

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay but definitely overrated
A few months ago I read that Swedish pop star Robyn had put out a new album. For those who are old enough to remember her, Robyn had a hit "Show Me Love" a decade ago. Back then I didn't think she had a great of a voice, a decade later I still feel that way. I recently acquired a copy of her new self-released, self-titled album. ROBYN follows in the footsteps of Kylie...

2) "Curriculum Vitae" also has the f-word muted, in the middle of a monologue.

3) "Dream On" has about 1.5 minutes of silence at the end, which is very annoying, apparently as buffer time before the final 'bonus' track.

Amazon should label which tracks have been censored, so customers will know if they are buying damaged goods. Concerning (1) and (2), if you want the originals, look elsewhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars Female Pop Album of the Decade??, January 27, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Robyn (Audio CD)
If you like anything along the lines of Madonna, Britney, Kylie Minogue, or Fergie, then this is right up your alley, because Robyn Carlsson combines the sonic blend of differing styles of pop and has turned out a gem of an album that is beyond being worth the extra few bucks to buy this import. This is just brilliant, with catchy rap-like sing alongs of the track "Konichiwa B***ches" and "Cobrastyle" to the string-laden uptempo pop of "Be Mine!" and the dance number "With Every Heartbeat" which is brilliant 80's style dance pop that could have come right off of Cyndi Lauper's "She's So Unusual" album. Previously I was impressed with the sound of Sweetbox, but this blows that away. I had once thought the futuristic beats of Timbaland and Danjahands were unique, but this blows that away. I was once under the impression that, as pop music goes, no new ground would ever be broken. I was wrong. This is the female dance-pop equivalent to Michael Jackson's Thriller, it is that good. All the sarcastic, sardonic jeers that I have made in past reviews about the bland, pretentious, hyped-up releases of today's lame pop stars must have been answered from above, because this album is as close to a miracle that I have heard in quite some time. Where as once I was blind, now I see....I see Robyn making a huge comeback worldwide in 2008.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superpop, January 11, 2008

I wish I could send this album to a plethora of current pop music stars with the following note attached: "This is what 21st century pop music should be."

Thanks to Perez Hilton for encouraging me to check out Robyn's (who I'd remembered as a one-hit wonder from about a decade ago) recent music. "Robyn" is a knockout pop album. It's full of tight, soulful, minimalist-electro grooves from a feisty, expressive vocalist. It puts most recent American pop albums to shame.

Highlights: "Bum Like You", an ode to loving bad boys, the melancholy, trance-y "With Every Heartbeat", The vulnerable/powerful "Who's That Girl" and the hidden track, an adorable cover of Prince's "Jack U Off."

5.0 out of 5 stars Really, really good., December 8, 2007

I'll cut to the chase -- this is a fantastic pop album, a refreshing new sound, so different from the top 40 schlock that clogs pop radio (here in the US at least). We need more albums like this; inventive, quality pop! If you like hip hop, dance, electro or futuristic pop in general, you will love this album (if you like the sound of Britney's new album, for that matter, you'll like this). It's a solid listen - the album tracks are just as good as the singles. Cough up the few extra bucks for the import price and get it. Konichiwa, b!tches!

5.0 out of 5 stars Astounding Return - Best Pop Album of the Year!, April 30, 2008
By
This review is from: Robyn (Audio CD)
It had been a while since I'd heard from Robyn (ROBYN IS HERE was a favorite album of mine in the 90's), so when I snagged the original import almost a year and a half ago, I about died and went to heaven.

As stunning as BACK TO BLACK from Amy Winehouse, if not more original. Props to both artists for writing their own material (for the most part).

This is a STELLLAARR return to the scene for Robyn, who surprisingly took a turn on background vocals for the once-reigning princess, Britney Spears, on "Piece Of Me" - it was produced by some of Robyn's Swedish buddies.

BUY THIS ALBUM if you are a fan of envelope pushing, yet widely accessible pop music that will live on as a testament to what can be done without consulting Timbaland, The Neptunes, Rodney Jerkins, Max Martin, The Matrix, or John Shanks.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Godsend, March 21, 2008
I found out about Robyn from a friend. She put "Be Mine!" on a mix cd, & I promptly went out & found this album. I have never been as impressed with an album as I am with this. In addition to owning this fabulous album, I also had the priveledge to see Robyn in her first US concert in 10 years I think she said. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. It was the best night of my life, and the best concert I have ever been to. Listen to the samples of her songs, & make your judgement. If you don't fall in love with Robyn, there is something wrong with your hearing.

5.0 out of 5 stars I feel lucky to have found her music, she's got an awesome sound, May 2, 2008
This review is from: Robyn (Audio CD)
Robyn is that strange and elusive thing - a pop artist that is creative, catchy, wears well over time, and is almost totally unknown by the general public. Hopefully that last part will change, because Robyn is one of my very favorite pop artists.

She writes her own songs, and you can tell - the lyrics are unusual and creative, and are delivered with conviction and relish. The music pushes the envelope, and in any album of hers, but especially this one, you can see different genres utilized and the evidence of her playing and just having a great time creating something new.

Crash and Burn Girl, With Every Heartbeat, Konichiwa Bitches, and Be Mine are the top standouts on this album, but you won't find any of the tracks annoying or filler. The songs stay fresh and new with every listen, and if you can get a hold of the single of With Every Heartbeat, with all of the remixes, you won't be sorry to have spent the money.

This is a must-buy album for any pop fan, for sure. Get the whole thing and don't bother downloading tracks, you will want it all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, May 1, 2008
This review is from: Robyn (Audio CD)
I just read about this album in last weeks People Magazine, which is the first, and still the only place, that I have heard about it. It was given 3.5 out of 4 stars by the reviewer, which I thought was pretty good. They also mentioned that it was a dance/pop album and I love dance so I decided to check it out. I first listened to the samples of it on Amazon. Then I went to Myspace TV and looked up all the songs/videos and completely fell in love!!! I chose to go the itunes route to purchase it, mainly because I have an ipod and I like getting the booklets. I bought the explicit version and the song "Handle Me" is the only one with a bleep in it, (censored word). I think that Robyn herself or her record label edited the word "Nazi". That's the only time anything is edited. So if Amazon doesn't sell the explicit version, now you know where to go.

Okay about why I gave the album 5 stars...

This is just an absolutely creative, unique, passion filled, meaningful, spectacular album. With all the Fergies, Britneys, Ashlees and Gwens out there, (not knocking them...),this album is in a completely different league, a better one at that too! It's so pleasing to the ear but it sounds like nothing I have ever heard before. If I could compare it to anything it would be to Cyndi Lauper with a little old school Madonna and a touch of Kylie Minogue.

Favorite tracks are... well... ALL OF THEM!!!! To be honest this is a "listen to the whole way through" album!

But I can't stop listening to "Be Mine"!!! I STRONGLY RECOMMEND DOWNLOADING THE BALLAD VERSION AS WELL!!! If you haven't heard it, look it up!! There is a live version of it on Myspace TV and You Tube. Another reason I love Robyn, her live voice gives me goosebumps! The Be Mine Ballad is one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard in my life. The original is pretty tight too though. Like I said every song is fantastic!

I want Robyn to do really well so I have turned my Myspace and Facebook pages into Robyn advertisements lol. Let's help this girl make it big because she deserves it and is completely underrated!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of 2008, June 10, 2008
This review is from: Robyn (Audio CD)
I really loved Madonna's latest, but Robyn's self-titled album has blown Hard Candy out of the water! From beginning the end the album is full of sweet, savage Europop/R&B goodness. This album is a smarter, cheekier and better-written version of anything Gwen Stefani, Nelly Furtado and Fergie have put out in the past four years. Please pick this up if you're looking for a new artist to sweeten your musical palate.
