These headphones are truly awesome, if you have the right sound card. Originally I had them plugged into my onboard sound card and would get a lot of constant feedback (specifically a minor hissing sound when there wasn't anything loud playing, or no sound at all). It was driving me nuts, so I did some digging and found a lot of folks mentioning if you get a nice beefy sound card, that the difference is incredible. Most of them pointed toward the Creative Labs SB0886 PCI Express Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Professional Series Sound Card so I went ahead and bought it. WOW - what a difference! The hissing was gone and I had total control over the positional audio, bass, and some extra tweaks thanks to Creative's software for their card. Anyhow, let me break down the pros and cons for the headphones.

- True surround sound. I've been playing mostly first-person style games like Battlefield 3 and Skyrim and these headphones work wonders in games like these. I can easily tell what direction sound is coming from, much better than any of the virtual surround sound headphones out there. Having surround sound really helps being immersed in a game!
- Noise cancelling is awesome - my wife yells at me sometimes about dinner, etc. and I don't hear her... can cause some arguments, but we just make jokes about it. Some very fine noise cancelling ;)
- Microphone sounds awesome. When I use it with friends they have said it sounds like I am sitting right next to them. Oh and the hardware mute button works really well. I have my computer on our main floor near the family/TV room.

This is my first pair of gaming headsets and I am very pleased with this product. I did alot of researching for a perfect set of headphones to suit my gaming profile and I have to say these Roccat Kave headphones are just perfect! I read alot of reviews here saying that the bass is not really loud. But for me they let out the right amount of boom for those high explosives that happen on screen. I use em to listen to music and to do heavy gaming and I never miss a beat with these. Sound is crisp and like I said the bass is excellent for my taste. I guess others are complaining that the bass is low but I guess they want some headphones that leave you deaf. It comes with a seperate equalizer that lets you ajust the different channels to your liking and one of those settings are for bass where you can add more or less bass. Like I said these headphones are excellent quality and sound. My only gripe is like others have stated here, is that they do tend to get a bit uncomfortable after awhile due to the padding underneath the top side of the headphones. What I do is just move the head phones a bit forward where it doesn't bother me anymore and continue using em without any problems. The mic is detachable and comes with blue led's which go great with my color scheme of my computer where I have blue led's on it too. I highly recommend these as you can't go wrong with them!

Let me make one point clear: whatever gripes I may have about the Roccat KAVE headset, it is probably the best value in a gaming headset you're going to find. The KAVE delivers what it sells: surround-sound gaming with very good audio directionality. You won't ever again wonder where that sound is coming from. The headset is well built and the microphone is well designed.

It might be obvious to some, but this is not a headset which uses USB audio (despite the USB plug), so you will need a sound card capable of 5.1 audio output! This means three audio jacks for outgoing audio, as well as a fourth jack for the mic, and a USB port for power. I purchased a second sound card for my KAVE so that I didn't have to unplug the KAVE every time I wanted to listen to music on my external speakers.

Although the quality of the sound does not compare especially well with audiophile headphones, at this price point it was never intended to. The KAVE has clear highs, natural mids, and very acceptable bass tones. When gaming, you're gonna love 'em. They're perfectly reasonable for listening to music but don't expect miracles. The closed nature of the headset blocks out a good deal of external noise and keeps your game noise from disturbing others.

The microphone is especially nice, and is IMO a real selling point for this headset. Your voice is recorded very cleanly, with a minimum of external noise. This is extremely beneficial in noisy environments such as LAN game sessions. The blue light on the microphone's head is wonderful for indicating whether it is "live", and the mute button on the control box is easy to reach.

I bought this headset replacing a Medusa 5.1 that I had for 4 years. I noticed right away the sound was much cleaner and more direct than the Medusa's. I use Teamspeak 3 a lot and the Mic works really well too. Comfort wise I have mixed feelings. When wearing them the top bar that goes over your head is canted a little so it is not sitting flat on the top of your head. It seems you need to have the crossbar to the back of your head for them to lie flat. When you do this they start to slip off. If I reverse them and wear them they are much more comfortable.

I also have a 5.1 speaker system that I use and both need to connect into the sound card. It would be great if they came with a switchbox that allowed selection between external speakers and the headphones. The Medusa's had this and made life easy. I primarily use this headset for Combat Flight Simulation and I would highly recommend them to anyone who needs a good sounding headset with mic.
