Eliot Fisk might be the most clinically insane member of the classical guitar community. The task of arranging Rochberg's titanic set of 50 variations for solo violin on Paganini's 24th caprice for solo guitar might be the craziest thing anyone has done for the instrument. The transcription the Eliot has made for this piece is an amazing addition to the repertoire (that statement being made with the provision that anyone besides Fisk can play this piece). Thanks to Fisk, the guitar repertoire now has a work of comparable scale and affect of Rzewski's monumental solo piano piece "The People United Will Never Be Defeated." However, I don't understand why Fisk decided to record the 50 variations out of order. This causes a ***HUGE*** determent to the piece. I personally cannot sit through the entire piece in the order that it has been recorded on this recording. There is a clear path of moving away from tonal constructs as the piece progresses and the order that it is recorded in here makes little to no sense at all. So what is the solution? Rip the CD to your computer and set up a playlist with the pieces in order. Granted, some of the track cuts are a little strange, but it is much better than sitting through a piece that is played in such an illogical order. The thing that really confuses me is that Eliot Fisk's publication of the score of his arrangement is in the correct order... I hope he fired his producer after this disc was made.
