Book Description

May 24, 2011
Rock musicals are an increasingly dominant force in contemporary musical theatre. Rock the Audition defines what is required of the actor-singer to succeed in the audition room and gives the aspiring performer the tools necessary to interpret rock material with abandon, creativity, and inspiration. This book shows those interested in auditioning for a rock musical how to holistically embody the essence of the show for which they are auditioning. Rock the Audition teaches performers how to: * Pick songs that have or have room to create a dramatic arc * Create their own appropriate cuts and arrangements, and successfully communicate the feel of a song to a pianist for proper support * Capture the essence of the musical they're trying out for * Understand the vocal styles of diffeent genres and how the styles changed over time * Act a rock song Sanders's method also helps singing actors refine their physical life in the audition room when singing a rock song, an approach profoundly different from that of the legit musical-theatre auditioner. Rock the Audition shows readers how to interpret the meaning of the chosen songs and how to bring their own unique point of view to those interpretations. DVD with coaching techniques on rock vocal styling and rock physicalization included.

5.0 out of 5 stars Audition with Style, Smarts, and Savvy March 4, 2013
Format:Paperback
I had the amazing privilege of sitting in to observe Sheri's Rock Audition class in New York years ago. I felt like I was watching a (better!) version of American Idol - to watch already-talented singers transform in just one session through Sheri's feedback and specific direction was amazing and exciting to watch. Sheri is a force in the entertainment industry with a well-deserved following. Her advice is concrete and grounded in years of experience. Best of all, her personality and passion shine through. This is the book to get if you want advice from someone in the trenches of the musical world who will help you understand what it takes not just to be good, but to leave a lasting impression!

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful February 8, 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am about to do a master class with Sheri and I can not explain how excited I am after reading her well thought out book. She clearly demonstrates every style of pop and rock music clearly through explaining the history of the time period and how it affects the style of the period. The DVD also helps immensely because it allows the reader to understand what she has been writing about both visually and orally. You are not wasting your time if you are reading this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've ever bought! January 8, 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is amazing! If you have ever EVER considered learning about rock music or differences in styles, this is the FIRST must read! Sheri takes you through the whole process and goes into to wonderful depth and explanation about the stylization, musical sound, background, and history of the time. I rarely ever find singing books helpful, so that makes this one all the more impressive! I only hope I get to meet Sheri someday and tell her what an impact this has made on me.
