PS3 Rock Band,

I bought this game solely for the purpose of downloading the songs for Rock Band 2 usage. You dont have to keep the original Rock Band after the songs have been downloaded. I did not play much of the game, but it appeared to be fine. It is fun to play with friends and use the various instruments.

We were introduced to Rock Band 2 about three months ago and have been playing practically every day since.
We bought Rock Band 1 just to import the songs into 2. With just a $4.99 import fee, it was well worth it to get an additional 50 or so songs.

You have to love Rock Band. From the opening video to all the gameplay, you do feel as though you're following a real rock band (punk, goth, whatever you prefer) from its beginnings to stardom. Along the way, you get to help out with gameplay that beats out the Guitar Hero series. For me, the track list is pretty great, and lots of other great music is available for download (try "Love Spreads" by the Stone Roses or "Train In Vain" by The Clash). My only gripe is that you end up in situations where you're forced to play a song you really don't like, made worse when it is super long ("Detroit Rock City," "Green Grass and High Tides," "Train Kept A-Rollin'".) And solo play is lackluster, something that was fixed in subsequent Rock Band releases. Nowadays this game is a great value and highly recommended for anyone who likes rock music.

Got this to transfer songs to RB2 (and now RB3),

Interface is a little clunky, but the game is fun. I had just gotten into RB when '2' came out, so I got this mainly to add to the collection. Did so without a hitch, but you do lose a couple songs (something about licensing). They transferred fine to RB3 too! Note: if you transfer these songs, you do have to pay a fee ($10) to import them.

Rock Band for the PS3 is everything you'd expect a rhythm game with the word "rock" in it to be. If you're at all familiar with the Guitar Hero series of video games, then you pretty much know what this is all about. The bonus to getting this game is that you can play with a drummer, bassist, and a vocalist in addition to the regular lead guitar. My experience with this game is solely from the guitarist perspective, so I can't comment on the functionality of the other instruments, but what I can say is that this game is addictive and pure fun.
Much like Guitar Hero, the screen displays a scrolling track with colored dots that correspond to the particular fret on your guitar (I'm using the Harmonix Fender guitar that comes with the Special Edition). Your job is to press the correct fret button and strum in time with the music. Seems simple, right? Well, it is if you're playing on the easy mode, but it gets much more difficult as you progress through the higher difficulty levels. The better you do, the higher your score. The better your score, the more money you can earn from your "gig". You can then purchase various items in the Rock Band store, such as clothing, instruments, and jewelry. That's right. You can customize your virtual guitar playing character on screen (hair style, facial hair, tattoos, clothing, body style, you name it). The game isn't meant to be a graphical powerhouse, but it looks alright. No, the graphics don't look as good as Uncharted or Metal Gear Solid 4, but they get the job done. The sound quality is pretty good. Most songs that come with the game are performed by the original artists (e.g. Nirvana, The Pixies, Nine Inch Nails). There are a few (e.g. Mississippi Queen) that are performed by some no name band, but that doesn't really detract from the fun. You can purchase lots of extra tracks through the Playstation Network for $1.99 each. The game has several modes. You can go "on tour" and play several venues the world over. You can also do a tutorial to master various playing techniques. There is a multiplayer component where you can go head to head with other players online (I haven't tried that yet). You can go solo or add any combination of band mates you like (singer, drummer, etc.). While playing you might be surprised just how much the game makes you wanna rock out. I can't stop swaying to the music, tapping my foot, and grimacing while banging out those wah wahs. It really is a blast, so rock on witcha bad self!

girl at gamestop told me only RB2 & 3 could download music online. That's not true, you can on this one too. The set list with the game is not the best, but its just as fun as the rest.

Even though the song selection is not as good as rockband 2, it still has tons of good songs to play or add to your rockbamd 2 library. The PS3 license to sync the songs to rockband 2 is only 5 bucks on the PS3 store. After buying the game and license it was still only 15 bucks to add 40 (I don't know the exact amount) plus songs! Great for getting a party started, and gets you away from repetitively playing a song you hate on rockband 2. I love it!

Rock Band is a really fun game with a lot of good songs.
the negatives are: -the loading time even for a PS3 still takes a bit of time to load up. -the medium mode is too easy but the hard mode is too hard. There should be more consistency in the medium mode. other than that, good game with good songs. And now it's lowered in price, an even better bargain.

I was given Rock Band 2 for Christmas and thought it would be great to get RB1 so I could import the songs and play it with RB2. Saw it online for $[...] and took the plunge. Went to import the songs and it told me I needed a keycode from the PS store. Went to download it and found out they charge $[...] for the code. No where else did it mention this fee. Needless to say I will not pay the $[...]. I'll play the game when I'm done with RB2. Also burns me that I can not backup the save data for either game. What happens if my PS3 crashes? Or I put in a larger HD?
