I bought this w/o the instruments because I already have the GH guitar, and I read all the troubles with the RB guitar. Funny thing is, so far I have spent more time singing than playing guitar. It is really fun. This is a really great game if you have an interest in music, or just dream of being a rock star.

I purchased the stand alone software because I have the wireless guitar from GH3 already. I've heard that there's issues with the rock band guitar so I guess I'm glad I didn't buy the special edition. I am thinking about picking up the drums though. Anyways, I have to say that this game is really awesome. I like the new format with square notes rather than the circle ones and it seems like the timing is better. I've found that I'm able to hit the notes more consistently than in GH3. Also, I have to say that the track list is far superior than any of the GH games. I've played through the solo career mode already and I'm getting ready to start playing the multiplayer. I've only played it on medium thus far and I think that it was a little too easy compared to GH; I'm probably going to start trying to play the songs on hard or expert mode next. One thing I didn't like about this game is that you have to play all 5 tracks for each show before moving onto the next ones. The nice thing about GH was that you only had to play 4 of 5 so if there was a really awful song, you could just skip it. There was a couple of shows in ROck band that I didn't really care for even one of the songs or really disliked one but you have to play them all. This is probably not a big deal for some people who play all the songs no matter what but it was a little bit annoying to me.
Anyways, I can say that this game is definately worth picking up and I think it's far superior to GH3

This game is incredible. The song list is solid, not everyone is a favorite, but there are enough true classics and a few that surprised me and I now really enjoy.
The game plays well (of course). If you don't know, or are worried, the Guitar Hero Controllers work with Rock Band, so if you already have one (or two) don't fret (ha!). Also, the headset that comes with most Xboxes can work for the vocalist. It's not as satisfying as holding one in your hand, but if you wanna rock on the cheap, it will do. Now, as for the "Career" section. it is pretty cool to create your rocker and go on tour and grow your fanbase. Especially cool are the "mystery setlists" where you will play multiple songs in a row, and even get a chance to 'take requests'. Not Bad. the collaborative scoring is inventive and it really does pay off to play together and not just as individuals. The character creation is very satisfying, plenty of options to design a character or two that personify your idea of a rockstar. Getting a chance to see them perform is strangely thrilling, if not very entertaining. Speaking of performance, whoever designed the background visuals for this deserves a freaking award. I actually get a taken in by how awesome the "virtual" band's performance is, its pretty compelling to watch your singer stage dive and keep singing while he's getting surfed over the crowd. or the slow motion power slide that your character performs right on time in the music. The visuals blow Guitar Hero away, without question. I would recommend beating the game right away and that way whenever you wanna have fun as a group, one of you login as that saved name. But aside from that just remember not to wake the neighbors.

If you've already played the Guitar Hero games, then you sort of know what you're getting into. But there is a large difference here. Whereas in Guitar Hero the goal was to attempt to play random notes as fast as possible, almost as if you were playing an old arcade shooter and you had to constantly button mash your way to victory, Rock Band is trying to teach you to play the songs on a plastic instrument.
The changes and differences don't end there, however. The new guitar that comes with rock band is much larger, and feels a lot better in my hands. Also the songs difficulties scale up nicely and more smoothly compared to the guitar hero franchise. Also do not worry if your points are normally lower than they were when you were playing Guitar Hero, the common consesus is that for every one point you get in Rock Band, it is equal to about one-hundred points in Guitar Hero. Each of the instruments are all really fun to play with exception of the bass. The bass guitar is probably the least fun one to play, this is mostly due to the fact that instrument lacks a career mode, and that most songs have them playing the same rythm the entire way through. For people who love to play bass, it'll be a very enjoyable time for them. For everyone else, however, they won't have much fun in it. The song selection is very well done and offers a nice challange to everyone playing. If you purchase this game and decided to "export" it to your hard drive, all songs will pass through except "Run to the Hills" by Iron Maiden and also "Enter Sandman" are not transferred over. The transfer fee is only 5USD which is not bad especially considering how many songs you get to keep with you as you play Rock Band 3 and beyond. The exception of "Run to the Hills" is a real shame since it was the most challenging song in the original game. As far as the instruments go, they are all of nice quality. But there is of course some problems. The guitars, for example, the white flipper switch on them tends to get worn out/stuck after using it for a very long time and the buttons become slowly worn down as you play. This is a similar issue that plagues the guitar hero controllers. The drums, however, are of amazing quality. I still have my original drums from the launch bundle and tehy are still kickingi strong. For parties and other social events, it is really amazing. I brought it up with me, to christmas at my parents house. My entire family was playing it, trying to sing along to some of the songs that they knew when they were younger. My dad, mom, aunt, and her boyfriend were all having a great time with it. Now my aunt and her now fiance have rock band 1 and 2 in their house along with quite a few tracks. My parents also have a 360 with rock band in their house too. It's a really fun thing to play at christmas and other get togethers since everyone can play it together and not worry about too much. The latest iteration really helps this with its no fail mode. But to summarize this part, if your family is anything like mine, it will pay for itself very quickly with all of the good memories to be gained from having this product and also future versions/dlc. If you're interested in getting the most bang for your buck, I highly suggest that you pick up this game, export the disk for 5USD(i believe it is a per disc option so you will have to get it new for this), and then playing either rock band 2 or 3. The songs will of course carry over and will add an amazing lineup to your list.

I started with rock band 2 and was just looking to add more songs to my library. Turns out, for us a little bit older people, there are more good songs on 1 than 2. Getting a bulk of songs buying this was cheaper than $2 each downloading from microsoft and not all these songs are available for download either. Didn't have to tour long to unlock all the songs, unlike 2 that took forever just to get all the 2000+ era garbage our youth calls music. Just a note, if you have rockband 2 your instruments will work for Guitar Hero III and newer, I bought most of those too for the same reason.

Wow, this game is pretty much the most fun I've ever had. My least favorite things to play are the guitar and the bass, because all you do is press some bright buttons, but the drums and mic are sooooo awesome. The drums are fun because I like hitting stuff really hard, and getting to sing songs like "Don't Fear the Reaper" is amazing. I can't tell you how many hours my friends and I have spent playing Rock Band, although it does get really annoying when someone wants to sing "Dead or Alive" ten times in a row.

I always thought the whole Rock Band/Guitar Hero thing was stupid. But I finally tried it at my girlfriend's house and let me tell ya... it was frickin' FUN! Enough so that I actually bought the Rock Band Special Edition set. I'm proud to say I am now an Expert Guitarist, Bassist and Drummer. The most fun I've had with a video game in years. 5/5. You don't even have to like video games to play this. Recommended to everyone.

Rock Band has to be one of the most addictive games ever to be made. Alot better buy then Guitar Hero World Tour. It's a good game to be by yourself and with friends or even family. You will not be disapointed in purchasing this game, plenty of good songs and many to buy. The only thing that annoys me is when you export the songs for rock band 2 not all of the songs export like Enter Sandman but it's no big issue. Overall this is a great game to play ranging from just you to a whole group. You will not be disapointed. I also recommend the ION Drum Rocker

My 9 year old and I both absolutely love this game. We really like music games in general, so this one was right up our alley. It's a little more challenging than the Wii games we've played in the past (we got this one for XBox with drums, guitar, microphone). Loads of fun, I highly recommend this game for other music lovers.

This is a terrific game with lots of good songs. Graphics are not as good as with rb 2 and 3, but I am from the nintendo generation, so no big deal there. I am restricted to singing right now, because I cannot get my guitar to properly calibrate with an HD flatscreen. Hopefully I will figure that out...
