Too old,
By Lady Helen (Eastern Wa state) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Big Rock Candy Mountain (Audio CD)
I loved Burl Ives as a child and wanted to introduce my grandchildren to some of his songs. I didn't read the fine print on the album cover and was surprised to find that his song are only about a third of the album. The other songs are done by Danny Kaye who really can't sing, and Bing Crosby. The sound quality is poor-sounds like old scratchy records. I guess we're all spoiled by technology and I hate to say it,but I would prefer to have the songs redone by someone else and be better quality. If you like authentic, this would be a great album. If you want something to entertain the kids, get newer versions. My grandkids, ages 3&6,who love music were most unimpressed.

Cool Stuff - fond memories for my wife,

We bought this to get a version of Bing Crosby's "Teddy Bear's Picnic", and we were pleased to discover Burl Ives and Danny Kaye. The song "Big Rock Candy Mountain" was re-popularized on the "O Brother Where Art Thou" soundtrack (different artist) so it was cool to hear a different version. Does this cater to today's kids? Probably not but it is quality stuff from a different era...still relevant for some of us today.
