Great history and literature,
By Pettigrew "North/South" (Moscow, ID USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Rock of Chickamauga (Hardcover)
I read Altsheler's series on the Civil War in elementary school 40 years ago and I recently rediscovered them at a used bookstore in Chapel Hill. It was the influence of these books that sparked a life long interest in this chapter of American history. I went from Altsheler to Douglas Southall Freeman in one year and haven't quit since, as my library attests. Parents looking for good reading material for children should consider Altsheler. The Civil War series follows the war through two cousins fighting on each side. The books were written near the turn of the last century, I read them in the 60s, so I am interested to now go back and read them with respect to how Altsheler dealt with the moral issues of the war.
