Gr. 4-7. These two titles in the publisher's new World of Sports series present a brief introduction to their respective sports in a bright, dynamic format that feels more like flipping through Web site screens than turning the pages. Pages blocked into text columns are set against school-bus yellow backgrounds, and are illustrated by beautifully-reproduced color photos. The book begins with overviews of star athletes; these are followed by chapters that explore the origins and the evolution of the sports. Technical vocabulary is defined clearly in the margins, and both volumes include quotes, in sports lingo, from current athletes. Attractive and well written for strong readers, these volumes provide lots of useful information. The anecdotal style, which reads more like a magazine article than a reference title, will probably appeal more to kids exploring sports than students looking for research support. Gillian Engberg
