Rock On, Rocks,
This review is from: Rock On (Audio CD)
Personally I love this album. The title song is definately my favourite and the reason I purchased this album in the first place... but I have grown to enjoy the whole album. I think the arrangements are brilliant and the songs great. "Turn me loose" has an Elvis quality to it, and his cover of Paul Simon's "For Emily, Whenever I may find her" is well done. It may not comprise his best works, but seeing as at the present time I don't have any of his later albums, I really can not compare. But this album is very good, and worth the price even if you only want it for the title song. Plus this album is digitally remastered too.

David Essex's debut album hasn't aged well: "Rock On" is still a moody, unsettling gem of a song, but other tracks here are unfocused. His best albums were still a few years off at this point.

In My eyes (and ears) he can do no wrong, I have followed his films and songs since school days in England, sat thru night after night of Evita in my teens. Recently on a trip back to the UK even watched his Christmas pantomine with my own daughter but Rock On is still the classic, lamplight and the best of, are also very good but if you are a fan, this album (sorry CD) Rock ON and that front cover are worth adding to the collection....Rock on David.P.S. The movie is still a good buy too !

Childhood Crush Remembers,

I had a 'thing' for David Essex when I first saw him in a movie about racing bikes(!) The two songs I knew him in - "Rock On' and the soldier's part in "War of the Worlds", I loved: so when I had the opportunity to buy his album "Rock On" it did not disapoint. It is fun, has several styles and is a great addition to my collection.

Bought this years ago. The song Rock On was pretty cool. The rest of the disk was nonsense. Pick it up at the library, listen and then take it back. Not worth paying for.

Perhaps the Finest Album of All Time,

David Essex single-handedly revolutionized rock music with this album. He made Black Sabbath look like a bunch of weenies, and, quite frankly, continues to do so. I once head-banged so hard to "Rock On" that I suffered a severe concussion. So, in conclusion, I recommend that you take Sir (I know that he is not a knight, but he should be) Essex's advice and "Turn [him] Loose" on your stereo or iPod, as I will "Streetfight" anyone who disagrees.

I love the song "Rock On" by Essex. It's unmatched in soundscape and somehow it keeps the rock n' roll spirit alive and well once turned up at a maximum volume.

Now if you ask me, and a lot of folk who like obscure British musicians do now and again, This here David Essex feller is probably the all time most obscure one-hit-wonder type artistes to come along in a coon's age. He had the one hit in the US and then vanished, so the folks what live on the left side of the Atlantic ain't really familiar with his larger body of work like the folk on the right side of the Atlantic are. However, them folk over there tell me that he is a pretty significant musical force even though he had only the one hit in the US and Canada... well, this album convinced me they was right and DE (as I like to call him) is a pretty good entertainer, a solid song writer, and a talented singer.
I'd suggest you get this album, especially of you know the one hit and are curious about what else he can do... because he can do a great deal. Junior loves "Rock On" because of the interesting syncopation and unexpected tempo changes. He likes to listen to music that is unusual and for a radio hit, this one was pretty unusual... not your run-of-the-mill schlock like you find on the radio these days. |
