Book Description

April 1, 2001 5 and upK and up
When an old, homeless donkey sets out on the road to begin a new life as a musician, he invites other animals who are down on their luck to join him. How this downtrodden menagerie—a dog, a cat, a donkey, and a rooster—come to realize their dream is full of humor—and some surprises—in this infectiously rhythmical new version of "The Musicians of Bremen."

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Ages 5-7. Foreman stages his version of the Grimms' fairy tale "The Bremen Town Musicians" in a locale suggesting the American southwest in the 1950s. A donkey who "didn't want to be made into pet food" runs away and meets a dog, a cat, and a rooster, who join him on the road, determined to become musicians. Together they frighten a band of robbers from their hideout, a run-down cafe, and defend their new home when the thieves return. The four friends transform the old place into a dance hall called Rock 'n Roll where crowds of teenagers gather to hear the animal band perform. The lively illustrations dramatize the action in a series of beautifully colored double-page spreads. An entertaining interpretation of an old favorite. Carolyn Phelan
