4.0 out of 5 stars Impressive, November 2, 2009
This review is from: Rock and Fire - Love Poetry from the Core (Paperback)
I must first admit that I am not a fan of poetry books. While I do enjoy reading poetry, it's difficult for me to sit down and read one poem after the other in a full book. Usually I get bored and only read a few of the poems. I tend to pick the ones that stand out to me and leave the rest.

However, this did not occur while reading this book. Marc Lacy's poetry book takes on a different aspect and style than most books of poetry. I was first impressed with the table of contents which listed the Chapters of the book. It begins with chapter one, The Rock, and ends with chapter five, The Fire. In between we have a story about love that is told poetically. There was no desire to put the book down. I had to keep reading in order to stay with the story.

I was also impressed with the poetry contained within these pages. It's sexy, romantic, thought provoking, spiritual, and full of emotion. It will challenge your intellect as well as baffle your senses. To put it plainly, it will make you think. That's what any good book should do. Keep your tissues handy while reading because you will cry. Sometimes it will be from the emotions and other times from laughter. This was definitely a great read.

4.0 out of 5 stars (RAW Rating: 3.5) - Emotional Ride, August 3, 2007
By
The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers (RAWSISTAZ.com and BlackBookReviews.net) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rock and Fire - Love Poetry from the Core (Paperback)
ROCK AND FIRE is a collection of poetry that carries readers to emotional extremes. Whether rocked by the spiritual themes scattered throughout many of the poems, moved by the depth of emotion in poems like "I've Removed Your Picture From My Wall", stirred by the passion in poems like "Is My Secret Safe with You" and "Touch If You Will My Stomach" or chuckling and nodding in agreement with poems like " Bruh, She Just Doesn't Want You" and "Sis, He's Just Not Feelin' You," there is something for everyone. I especially enjoyed following the series of text message poems interspersed throughout the book, the poems reveal the story of a couple who have reached a point of no return in their relationship.

Marc Lacy has put together an interesting and revealing collection of poetry. Though I enjoyed reading ROCK AND FIRE, there were many poems that were best enjoyed when read aloud, possibly a testament to Lacy's gift as a spoken word artist. There were instances where it seemed the poems would start down a particular path and then abruptly shift to something completely different. In some instances, this sort of juxtaposition had a dramatic emotional impact, but in others I found myself left behind and a bit confused. The poetry in ROCK AND FIRE doesn't hold back, rather, it exposes many of the author's intimate thoughts and feelings. As a result, readers can't help but be moved.

3.0 out of 5 stars Express Your Desire, July 31, 2007
This review is from: Rock and Fire - Love Poetry from the Core (Paperback)
I have been reading and enjoying poetry for as long as I can remember. Poetry that makes me think and sends chills down my spine. Lyrical verse that has an underlying meaning, that makes you stop and think. Marc Lacy gives you the man's point of view, when it comes to loving from the soul, in Rock & Fire Love Poetry from the Core.

There are over one hundred poems in this collection of poetry, all talking about "Love." One of my favorite poems was told in three-parts. Part one- a woman breaking up with her man via text message; part two- the man's response via text; the woman's reply via text. Another poem I liked was told in two-parts. Lacy showed the woman scorned and how she can turn from the beautiful woman in stilettos to a person trained in Special Forces' tactics. To be quite honest those were my favorite poems, "Hit Woman Part I and Hit Woman Part II," because Lacy showed how powerful a woman can be when she is hurt, a little crazy, but not the woman at home crying her eyes out.

This collection of poetry touches on different aspects of love. The diversity is never-ending in Rock & Fire. These pieces flowed better, when read aloud. I felt that some of the poems ended without truly being completed, and that some of the poems were confusing and I could not understand or tell what they were referring to. I would recommend Rock & Fire to the lover of poetry, and even to those who have never given poetry a chance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Teresa Rae Butler says, " COSMIC MEDS 4 THE SOUL and the BREAK-UP BEER!", July 26, 2007
This review is from: Rock and Fire - Love Poetry from the Core (Paperback)
Rock and Fire is THEE book of urban poetry for this year by far! It's comedy, tragedy and everything that was ever on your mind about a mate at a very long stop light! From page 20 to page 221, you as a reader will be turning in deep thought, related to Lacy's elegant, swift and gasoline potential, inflamed! My personal favorite is WHEN YOU LEFT ME, YOUR FRIENDS LEFT ME TOO. I found that one to be sooo true, because it's messed up when you find great friends, but you have to eventually break up with them, because they are dedicated to your ex and don't want to cheat on them by being a traitor to the enemy. Nothing like the heartbreak of drinking that last breakup beer at the bar with the great friend, because the old ex said to cut you off. Ever been there? Well Lacy takes U there! Marc Lacy is a poet ahead of his time, and Men and Women need to take notice of this gifted spirit. Truth be told, Universities need to pick this one up. I can see this book being apart of couple's counseling. Chapter one - The Rock, or the passion of new love- yall know... that hot, butterfly feeling? Chapter Two- The Aggregate- Well this is after the excitement calms down and you get to wonder if the other is feeling you as much as you feel them, or is this just lust? It's the confusing, uncertain part about digging someone- the break-up to make up stage. Chapter Three- The Concrete- That crazy stage when you tried other people and they just don't fit. Sowing your oates to find that you might have blew it with that one. The race to get that old thing back. The get back and realize, "OK, now I remember why I left U! BYE! GOODLUCK WITH THAT," moment. Chapter Four- The Spark- When you find that one who has everything that you liked about anyone. As close as perfect as you will ever get, and you know it on sight. The chance to be grateful for love this time. Chapter Five- The Fire- the conversation, the spirituality and beliefs, the finance, the accomplishments, the future goals in life, the body, the SEX...The way I feel about my man right now and Well... This is just straight up GROWN FOLKS BIDNESS once you know what to do with that! Feel me? Reflection (Rock and Fire) Everything you need to know about love but were too afraid to live. God is sooo Good! Love is life and life is love and Marc Lacy is poetry. Thank's for giving us this STUNNING POETIC FOUNDATION OF ROCK AND FIRE Marc Lacy! - Famous Milwaukee author, Teresa Rae Butler
