What a criminally underrated album,

Over the years, Many critics have wrote this album off as a failure for Aerosmith. But if ya ask me, This was the last good album Aerosmith would release for many years [Until 2004's unexpectedly good Honkin On Bobo]. This album, Being a rather obscure title in Aerosmith's long line of releases, Was made during the most troubled times of the band: Joe Perry and Brad Whitford left the band [Though Whitford plays guitar on ''Lightning Strikes''], The drug abuse within the band was at an all-time high, Record sales were falling, Things were just going bad for Aerosmith. In 1982, With new band members Jimmy Crespo and Rick Dufay, Aerosmith fleshed out this album. While it was not a best-seller like much of their albums from the 70's, This was a highly entertaining album. If you get past the fact that Joe Perry and Brad Whitford are not on this album, You will find that there is some great material on this album. The best songs on the album are ''Jailbait'' [Love the beginning of this song very much], ''Lightning Strikes'', ''B*tch's Brew'' [A highly entertaining song that is actually one of Aerosmith's best songs], and my personal favorite ''Bolivian Ragamuffin''. The title track and ''push comes to shove'' are both great songs too. From the first time i heard this album, I came to the conclusion that the very negative attention that this album has garnered over the years has been very unjustified. While this album may not be the bonafide classic that Rocks or Toys In The Attic or even Get Your Wings was, This is a great album from Aerosmith from a time when they used to rock. It's a shame that Aerosmith would completely sell out a few years after this and Done With Mirrors [Which actually was a horrible album]. I highly reccomend this to any Aerosmith fan that likes any of their pre-Mtv material. And you'll even be glad to know that this album is at its cheapest price ever at only $7.

REALLY A HARD PLACE,
This review is from: Rock in a Hard Place (Audio CD)
A wonderfully hard rockin' Aerosmith album that fails to suffer from the temporary departure of Perry and Whitford, in fact the new blood raises the ante for the band and this remains a great Aerosmith album to this day. Perry is oft quoted as wishing he'd been there to co-write the fabulous Lightning Strikes. As a great Perry fan (Aerosmith and solo) I still find this album chock full of the usual swagger and searing guitar that the band's fans adore.

steven tyler solo album?,

Possibly the closest cd in the Aerosmith catalogue to what could be considered a Steven Tyler solo album. Great song writing, memorable riffs, and hard rockin' all the way around. A few of my all time favorite Aerosmith songs, "Bitches Brew", "Lightning Strikes" and "Jailbait". Who else could write a song called "Jailbait" and get away with it? Other great tunes as well. I highly recommend this album which to me captures a similar sound to "Rocks" but without some of the tasty Joe Perry riffs. The two guitarists on the album, however, do capture his essence, in my opinion, and do a great job in imitating his style, so much so that you may not notice at first that it's not Joe Perry playing on the album. What are you waiting for? If you have Toys and Rocks and want more of that sound, not the top 40 pop Aerosmith of today, go and get it.

While it isn't their best album, as you can see by the amount of sales this thing sold, it's still sounds good.If you're hard up for some Aerosmith sound of the 70s, this album is worth trying out. Even at its worst, it will sound better than much of the newer material.

Rock in a Hard Place is definitely one of the most hard rockin' albums I've ever heard in all my life! It's got 3 of my favorite Aerosmith songs,Jailbait, Jig Is Up, and best of all, Lightning Strikes! Push Comes To Shove and Cry Me A River are also great songs! This is one of the final studio albums Aerosmith made that has the classic, raw, and edgy style that Aerosmith is known for, (the last being Done With Mirrors). After that, they HEAVILY relied on outside collaborators to help them with song writing and made HORRIBLE and repetitive ballads. Even though Joe Perry and Brad Whitford were gone, their replacements still gave a heavy feel to the album, (even though Brad's on Lightning Strikes). So if you're looking for classic Aerosmith before they turned into a wimpy ballad band, get this one. You will not regret it!!

good one from the band,

This one clearly inspired 'spinal tap' with it's cover but the music is good rock and that's a fact. It was a good effort and had a good lead guitarist replacement. It has some great songs on it too like 'when the lightening strikes' and a few others and some more pedestrian rockers but it's not a stinker or even as flat as 'done with mirrors' sounds which is why that one is so average. This is a little above average, more like a three and a half , than a four star but so it goes. The sound stands up well though.

Most people out there I know dont even know this album exists and thats a real shame because it has some really good songs on it (I dont care that its not all the orignal members) buy it if you like Areosmiths sound in the 80s,this is a rock album not a pop album

I bought this cd with the attitude of being a completionist. There isn't anything terribly bad on the cd, however,it obviously is missing the Joe Perry sound. The fillin guitarists were more than capable in fact they were too good. Their playing was good and tight, but you can never seem to replace the initial body parts or heart and soul for that matter.
