5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Instrumental Collection
This cd replaces some of the original 45's that I had back in the 60's. My favorite, "Apache" (Jorgen Ingmann), may have been a few years ahead of its time when it was released in 1961. It certainly wasn't cut from the typical mold of three or four guitars and a drummer. It was also popular enough that there was a vocal version made (can't remember who made it),...

3.0 out of 5 stars Instrumentals you never hear on oldies stations
The songs on this album, with only a couple exceptions, are ones that just don't seem to get any play on oldies stations.

My favorite song on the album is "Apache." I remember it well from my childhood days. I also really like "Classical Gas," "No Mater What Shape," and "Wheels."

I think the instrumentals selected for this compilation were good...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Instrumental Collection, October 20, 2001

This cd replaces some of the original 45's that I had back in the 60's. My favorite, "Apache" (Jorgen Ingmann), may have been a few years ahead of its time when it was released in 1961. It certainly wasn't cut from the typical mold of three or four guitars and a drummer. It was also popular enough that there was a vocal version made (can't remember who made it), but it was far from the hit that Ingmann's version was. A one hit wonder from Denmark, "Apache" made it all the way to # 2 on the US charts. "(Ghost) Riders in the Sky" is a great rock version of the old Vaughan Monroe hit (late 1940's I think). The background sounds of whooping cowboys and bleeting steers adds to the flavor of the track. "No Matter What Shape" (T-Bones) was based on the popular Alka-Seltzer commercial, which I remember very well. In fact, the T-Bones 33 1/3 album of the same name (which I still have) features a scene from the commercial, one man poking the very large protruding stomach of another man. "Bulldog" (Fireballs) is one of those rock insturmentals that you simply cannot avoided tapping your toes to but don't hear on the oldies station. The rest of the cd is just as enjoyable, a great addition if you like instrumentls.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Great Instrumental Hits, June 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Rock Instrumental Classics 2: 60's (Audio CD)
I bought this cd because I was looking for the song Wild Weekend by the rebels. Some of the songs like Lets Go by the Routers and Riders in the Sky by the Ramrods are new to me. This is a great collection and Rhino records should be congradulated for not putting in re-recordings of these songs like some labels do.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sensational!, May 8, 2000
This review is from: Rock Instrumental Classics 2: 60's (Audio CD)
Nothing beats a good rock and roll instrumental, and this collection has some of the best. My favorites are "Wild Weekend," "Apache," "Walk Don't Run," and "No Matter What Shape Your Stomach's In." Plus, Rhino records does a wonderful job of remastering all of the songs. They have never sounded better.

Most of the great rock instrumentals are here. I was disappointed that "The Lonely Bull" was not included, but I guess I'll just have to keep looking for that one. The sound is great and they are all original hit versions by the original artists. Can't beat that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Let's go!, April 26, 2005

This is a fine collection of instrumental rock hits from the 1960s (although it's stetching things to call "Classical Gas" "rock"). All the songs here were Top 30 hits, with over half of them going Top Ten. It's a bit odd that The Ventures only get one song, while B. Bumble & The Stingers and Lonnie Mack each have two songs, but what the heck. There are plenty of Ventures compilation albums if you want the rest of their hits. This album is worth getting for the hard to find "one hit wonder" instrumentals. Recommended to fans of rock instrumentals.

The requisite hits are here, of course, minus about a million probably due to licensing issues and great things like that. Reading the song list is like listening to an oldies station - - most of this stuff will immediately pop into your head before you even hear it due to its perennial airplay: The Ventures' 'Walk Don't Run', Jorgen Ingmann's Les Paul-styled nick 'Apache', Mason Williams' 'Classical Gas', etc. There are a few duff tracks, of course. The Ray Bryant Combo's 'The Madison Time' (ominously subtitled 'Part I') is not only not an instrumental, nor a classic, but is annoying as hell to boot. ("Hit It!" Good idea, Ray. C'mon over here for just a sec, willya?) The Routers' 'Let's Go' isn't strictly an instrumental either, but it IS a classic and it passes because the title comprises its entire lyric content. Besides, it's so gleefully moronic that it might as well be an instrumental. Apart from the music, what's really great about this collection - - and all five in this Rhino series - - is that the remastering is superb, especially considering the age of this stuff. Pristine, incredible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!!, March 10, 1999

This CD culminates the greats of instrumental rock. My father introduced me to a few of these bands on LPs and I was instantly hooked. Nothing brings back memories of the times I spent with my dad like the music in this CD!

This collection, along with the rock instrumental 50's classic is a great addition to any collection, for you don't hear these recordings hardly at all.The availability of these cd's is a very good thing, as to get all these hits together at an excellant price is extremely hard to do and find. All these songs are original and of course,Rhino, can be counted on for the real stuff. This cd should be given 10 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars good collection of instrumentals, April 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Rock Instrumental Classics 2: 60's (Audio CD)
this is a good representation of sixties instrumentals that range from the very good memphis and wham by lonnie mack and apache by jorgen ingmann to the almost frivilous wheels by the string a longs. there is some material here that paved the way for persons such as santana and stevie ray vaughn. I enjoy listening to these tracks not merely for nostalgia but for the musical creativity and style.
