3.0 out of 5 stars good fun
Die-hard Tom Petty/Mike Campbell fans will recognize "Diamond Head" and "Penetration" from previous concert footage/recordings (albeit bootlegs). Alright, I admit that's why I bought this. However, I'm hearing the other items for the first time and I admit I like "Mr. Rebel" and "Wipeout" should be easily recognizable. Sticker on outside of CD promises all lyrics...

But it's not all reverb guitar cliches here. There's a diversity of style, evident in the 4/4 rock stylings of "Surfer Stomp," the lush orchestration of "The Lonely Surfer" and Dick Dale's penchant for Middle Eastern melodies.
The CD also features a very well-written booklet about the emergence of surf music, providing a great introduction for groms, surf neophytes and even jaded big kahunas. Well worth the five star rating!

5.0 out of 5 stars Let's go surfin', October 26, 2004

This review is from: Rock Instrumental Classics, Vol. 5: Surf (Audio CD)
This is a great album of surf instrumentals from the 1960s. It contains almost all of the best known surf classics, although "Out of Limits" is not here (it's on a different volume of this series). In addition to the classics, there are a few lesser known gems thrown in as well. If you only want to get one album of surf music, you can't go wrong with this one. Highly recommended.

I couldn't have put together a better CD myslef. This has all the surf classics that I have been longing for on one CD. The Pyramids "penetration" and the Lively Ones "surf rider" are truly great! This CD is a must, one of the most listened to in my collection

4.0 out of 5 stars An accessible introduction to surf rock, January 3, 2006
By
This review is from: Rock Instrumental Classics, Vol. 5: Surf (Audio CD)
If you wish to know whether or not you are a surf rock fan. Most of the biggest surf rock instrumental classics are included on this compilation. Just about every one of the major artists are included here, such as Dick Dale, the Ventures, and the Challengers. If you are already a diehard surf fanatic, you probably already own most (if not all) of the songs included here, so theres no need to pick this up. However, if you are only a casual fan (or if you need at least one album representing every major rock period in your collection), this is a good purchase. Each one of these songs presents why surf rock was one of the coolest genres ever. Even though its not an extremely varied style, it rocked and rocked hard through an era when many said rock 'n' roll was dead or dying (between when the original wave of rockabilly died out and before the British Invasion). If you enjoy this album, I suggest you pick up Rhino's Dick Dale compilation and if you can track it down their Surf box set. Like many genres which are becoming popular again, you'd have to search through a lot of dull and uninspired artifacts to get to the gold. This sampler represents the best of the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hang ten with twang, December 9, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Rock Instrumental Classics, Vol. 5: Surf (Audio CD)
The twang of surf guitar is addictive, and there's no better way to get your fix than with this typically great Rhino collection. Dick Dale, the Ventures, etc. are all here. It's a great record that's equally at home at the beach, the office or the living room, dude.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Surf Classic Compilation, November 7, 2001

This is the definitive surf classic compilation, in my opinion....a sure pleaser. I lucked out by purchasing this as my first surf instrumental album after getting hooked by "Pulp Fiction's" movie soundtrack. After branching out to others, now I realize how good of a collection this is.....a "must-have." No cheesy tracks, no poor choices, all gold! Still playing regularly after several years (unlike several other compilations that didn't quite make it...and now collect dust.) Can't go wrong with this one.

This is one of the best collections of surfer rock in my collection. No filler here, just classic surf rock at its best.

This is an excellent collection of surf classics. Great album to get if you want to get the 'standards' without buying all the various original albums they came on. Quite a few of the really great pieces are here, in one set. Really took me back to my childhood in southern California!

4.0 out of 5 stars Old Rhino collection still the best.., March 16, 2002
This review is from: Rock Instrumental Classics, Vol. 5: Surf (Audio CD)
on the market at least. Hey Rhino how about a two disc set of Surf instrumentals. While most of the essentials are here there are a few missing. And as some of Rhino's other surf collections demonstrate there are some re-found classics (including the tunes from Pulp Fiction) that now need to be added. Oh well, until some movie soundtrack or commercial sparks the interest of the general public, we geeks will have to wait.l
