Editorial Reviews

Product Description

The music of Tim O'Brien's Rock in My Shoe neatly defines the artist's considerable range as singer, songwriter, and picker. The album offers soul-flavored bluegrass (a duet with Glenn Zankey on the spirited "Climbin' Up a Mountain"), honky-tonk humor (a rowdy, sing-along string-band version of the Neal McCoy hit, "Small Up and Simple Down"), and pretty ballads (an evocative story about a girl escaping a small town to find the "Edge of the Storm"). Best of all is the catchy Cajun tune about a romantic memory that irritates like a "Rock in My Shoe." All in all, Tim O'Brien straddles the boundary between bluegrass and country better than anyone since the days before Ricky Skaggs got too preachy. --Geoffrey Himes

5.0 out of 5 stars Rock In My Shoe November 30, 1999
By "gbros"
Format:Audio CD
ive been somewhat followin this guy ever since i saw him at the Birchmere years ago doin the Hot Rise/Red Knuckles thing. At that time, i deemed him one of the most talented young musicians i had ever seen. i give him credit for exploring his creative talents since, and while i havn't liked everything he has done, this CD IMO is the Tim Obrien i like, at his best. Nice variety, well recorded, there's not a bad cut on there.

3.0 out of 5 stars Clown Shoes November 12, 1999
By A Customer

Tim O' Brien is one of the finest pickers-singers-songwriters in folk-bluegrass-celtic music. My favorite songs from "Rock In My Shoe" are "Climbin' Up a Mountain" , "Daddy's on the Roof Again" and "One Girl Cried". If you enjoy good picking, singing or songwriting, you'll find something to like in this outing. Tim, if you read this: You need to get Mark Graham on another recording, its been a while...

Wonderful music and energy! I have been watching you, Tim O'Brien! The music is full of light and wonder. This album is where Tim relaxes into his own style and TAKES OFF! Fabulous!

It's hard to classify this CD -- bluegrass, folk, country? It is uneven in spots in terms of the quality of the songs, and I think O'Brien could have used a more full instrumental package on some of the songs. Still, who am I to question producer Jerry Douglas? Many of the songs grow on you and make you want to hit "replay" again and again. I bought it after being blown away by hearing him do "Brother Wind" on Transatlantic Sessions, and I'm not sure that song is even the strongest on the album. I bought it used, and it was more than worth what I paid for it. I'll be getting more of O'Brien's CD's in the future.
