5.0 out of 5 stars White boy learned from Millie J!, January 24, 2009
This review is from: Rock N' Soul (Audio CD)
When feelin bitchy came out I was barely 16 and it changed my Donny and Marie days, for good. Suddenly I was listening to this amazing woman whose songs made my friends and family run thinking I was a nutcase yet, kept them listening around the corner the whole time! Ya, I was a fortunate white boy in a white world and once it ended, I began to live honestly with Millie Jackson forever. Live and Unsensored (can we even get it anymore) was on constant rotation in my vinyl days. This woman will never go down in the dust bins if I am still kickin along. Talent, tenacity, vocal superiority and dang good tell it like it is mentality. Love ya Millie J.........life is good with ya.

Your loyal white boy (who is just a bit grey now)

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW! Millie out-rocks Def Leppard!, July 14, 2008
By
This review is from: Rock N' Soul (Audio CD)
An unenlightened, narrow-minded critic described Millie's cover of Def Leppard's "Pour Some Sugar On Me" as "ludicrously faithful" to the original - BALONEY!

When that song came out back when I was in high school in the mid-80's, we all treated it like the prepubescent joke that it was. And subsequent Karaoke nights involved guys like me easily lampooning Def Leppard's lead singer's Spinal-Tapesque vocals, much to the intense merriment of those in the bar.

But Millie COMPLETELY breathes REAL (not contrived adolescent screeching like the original) lusty hard-rockin' heavy metal fire into it, as we all knew she is fully capable of, since she has effortlessly covered songs from other genres as well. It merely proves once again that despite Millie Jackson's gimmicky raunchiness (originally done by her merely to distinguish herself from Gladys Knight), the plain truth is that she is a wholly underrated vocal dynamo.

Her bread and butter has been that niche market of working class African-Americans who like it a little naughty (albeit when they think no one is watching). But this cover PROVES beyond any shadow of a doubt that if Millie ever wanted to go that route, she'd have a legion of raunchy, rowdy, head-bangin' white rock fans waiting for her with open arms.

I'll blast her reinterpretation of "Pour Some Sugar On Me" in my car as if I was 16 again, and share it with aa many aging headbangers as I can find. Trust me, give it a listen, and you'll agree that she even out-rocks Tina Turner on this one!

ROCK ON, MILLIE! And you're right about the one thing that's emblazoned on those T-shirts you sell on your Wierd Wreckuds website: "OLD BITCHES GOT IT GOIN' ON!"

Give me more, Love Doctor, I can take it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Modern Soul Classic, far too overlooked!, March 6, 2005

KRA (East End of LI) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rock N' Soul (Audio CD)
Millie Jackson is far more of a diverse artist than many many people giver her credit for. This awesome CD from the mid-90's is one of her best, and includes many of her greatest traits
from giving country tracks a R & B makeover (Whenever You Come Around), and doing the same for rock tracks (Pour Some Sugar On Me) to her own funky "Love Quake", and some great 70's style soul (Choc. Brown Eyes, and Put My Check In The Mail). This CD is a "clean record" as Millie would say, yet it deserved to be amoung her greatest sellers. For those who like Millie's trademark "blue tinged" songs, but this CD AND the newer "Not For Church Folk"
