4.0 out of 5 stars Good but no quality softcore or duck and cover.
First off this is no where near as good as any of the mad caddies other titles and theres a lack of horns but it's still a great punk album thats pretty hard to get tired of. The mad caddies are probably one of the best ska bands around at the moment so if you find any of there cds you should give them a try. The cd is'nt all about pirates but wierd beard (which is) is...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Punk - Not Ska
For something promoted as "Pirate Punk", this isn't. It isn't Ska either. That said, the music isn't too bad. A melodic rock album that reminds me a bit of the Jellyfish's Bellybutton in tone and mood (at least in places).

Not exactly a good introduction to what this band is all about, but an enjoyable album regardless.

First off this is no where near as good as any of the mad caddies other titles and theres a lack of horns but it's still a great punk album thats pretty hard to get tired of. The mad caddies are probably one of the best ska bands around at the moment so if you find any of there cds you should give them a try. The cd is'nt all about pirates but wierd beard (which is) is one of the greatest joke songs iv'e ever heard. Bridges is another great song along with we'll start to worry when the cynics start believing and days away which is probably the best track on the cd. The absence of the horns is what makes this cd a 4 star rating and not a 5 as thats the only real let down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Long Live Pirate-Core, April 18, 2001
This review is from: Rock the Plank (Audio CD)
This new album intoduces a new sound for the Mad Caddies, pirate-core, and it rocks. The only problem with pirate-core songs is that there are only two of them. The rest of the album is pretty cool too, and yes there are less horns but the Mad Caddies still have a lot of energy, a unique sound, and they flat out rule the ska-punk scene.

4.0 out of 5 stars Who stole the horns?, June 17, 2001
This review is from: Rock the Plank (Audio CD)
Mad Caddies' new release "Rock the Plank" is a very good punk-rock Cd with some ska elements. I like the Cd a lot but it's not what I had expected. Mad Caddies are well known for their awesome horn players, but not on this Cd, it's like somebody stole their horns. This Cd is - GOOD - punk-rock, but it has nothing to do with their previous dixieland-ska Cd's.

5.0 out of 5 stars Different, but good, June 17, 2001

This review is from: Rock the Plank (Audio CD)
This album is catchy, fun to listen to, and has a nice variety. Granted, it is not as good as Duck and Cover or Quality SOftcore, the two best albums in the whole freakin world, but I still like it a lot. The horns and dixieland ska-punk is missing, which kind of pissed me off, but i like punk too, and the caddies do straight punk well. I do hope they go back to their old style, but i am content with Rock the Plank. Weird Bierd, Mary Melody, B-Sides, and All-Ameican Badass are my favorite tracks. Get this album, but don't expect old Caddies style.

This CD is the best. Mary Melody, Weird Beard, and Easy Cheese are sweet songs. If you like punk and a little bit of ska I suggest you buy this CD!

1.0 out of 5 stars Where Are The Horns!?!?!, April 10, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Rock the Plank (Audio CD)
Ask any Mad Caddies fan what makes the band so unique, and I'll gaurantee what they will answer: the horns. That's why I was shocked and disgusted when I first listened to their new album, "Rock The Plank".

6 of the 13 songs (Shaving Your Life, Bridges, We'll Start To Worry When The Cynics Start Beleiving, Easy Cheese, Depleted Salvo, and Chevy Novacaine) on the Rock The Plank have no horns whatsoever! The Mad Caddies style is completely absent in these songs, sounding like any pop-punk band instead of the band that we have grown to love. Two more songs (B-Side and Days Away) only have a short fade-in fade-out of horns at certain parts. Of the remaining 5 songs, 2 of them (Weird Beard and All American Badass) have plenty of horns, but are simply fluff, and have an annoying amount of acordian in them.

The only decent songs are the album are Mary Melody, Hound Bound, and Booze Cruise. Mary Melody is easily the best, and the only that would fit in with the songs from the other two albums, Duck And Cover and Quality Soft Core. The recent EP, The Holiday Has Been Cancelled, showed that the band was moving in a heavier, less horn-oriented direction, but this album is an obvious dissapointment. If you don't own one of their other albums buy it instead, and if you do own them, only bother if you think you can stand their new pop-punk style.
