4.0 out of 5 stars Confrontational early New York punk, October 6, 2002
This review is from: Rock N Roll Cleopatra (Audio CD)
County was a confrontational artist of the seventies who no doubt must have inspired later artists like Lydia Lunch, the New York No Wave scene and performance artists like Monte Cazzazza. She was both a pre-punk and later a star of the punk scene, much like Iggy Pop. The sound varies between a type of decadent and trashy glamrock, in the vein of the NY Dolls, or garage rock like on this version of I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night, or straight angry punk as on tracks no. 5, 12, 17 and 20 above. In fact, these last four songs first appeared on her famous Blatantly Offensive EP that appeared in colored vinyl way back in 1978. Most of her punk hits are collected here, like Storm The Gates of Heaven, Things Your Mother Never Told You, Eddie & Sheena and Man Enough To Be A Woman. This album contains most of her best, although I miss other great tracks like the wistful, Nico-esque Tomorrow Is Another Day (reminiscent of Sunday Morning on the Velvet Underground's "Banana" album) and another UK single, Trying To Get On The Radio.
