Biography

New Orleans is said to be a city where having a party has been elevated from a casual pastime to a way of life. Nobody understood this better than Professor Longhair, one of the pioneers of New Orleans rhythm & blues. His influence can be heard in Fats Domino, Allen Toussaint and Dr. John, among many others. Known for his unique mix of blues, jazz, calypso, ragtime, and zydeco, ... Read more in Amazon's Professor Longhair Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the Best June 26, 2010
Format:Audio CD
Every aspect of this release is outstanding: The sound quality, the Professor in top form, song selection, and the band which includes great guitar work by Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown. Much as I love Crawfish Fiesta, this album is even better. Get it, you won't regret it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rock'n Roll Gumbo--Professor Longhair November 9, 2006
Format:Audio CD
After seeing Elvis Costello and Allen Toussaint support their "River in Reverse" CD, I had to step back to Professor Longhair. It's the real thing.

4.0 out of 5 stars A re-release, but still the real thing! March 1, 2009
By R G-S
Format:Audio CD
This appears to be a re-release of the Windham Hill album of the same name, with different cover art. R&RG, and with the Alligator Records' "Crawfish Fiesta" are the real modern Fess ALBUMS, rather than live tapes, compilations of old singles, or semi-bootlegs.

Here. Fess is coupled with Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown for a well-paced and impeccably recorded selection of his hits and standards. The band's rehearsed, the piano's tuned, and there's no crowd noise. It'll make you wanna go to New Orleans for Jazz Fest!

It's just a lagniappe that the original production was by, of all people, New-Age-y pianist George Winston.

5.0 out of 5 stars "dat sound like ice cream and pie!" July 25, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Get the feet tapping and the alpha waves flowing with this....Professor Longhairs best album. Fess puts on an absolute masterclass in NOLA/blues/boogie woogie/calypso/jazz/funk piano playing. This album will put a huge smile on your face and have you groovin so hard that you'll end up hospitilized.

BUT WAIT! FESS DOUBLED THE OFFER!!!

He also included on the album, for your listening pleasure, the guitar artistry of the great Clarence Gatemouth Brown. The licks are tasty as is the interplay between the two masters.

Forget the imitatators...listen to Fess, he is the real deal!

4.0 out of 5 stars not my fave February 8, 2014

Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Okay, it's The Professor. And it is a really good band. And some of the songs on this cd kill. But I have a couple nits to pick. First, the way it is mixed or equalized, the voice is nearly drowned out by the instruments on some cuts. Maybe his voice was weak when this was reocrded. It sure sounds that way. Also, the driving, rock-like way some of the songs are played kind of overrides Fess's usual funky syncopation. I guess it seems to me this cd is more about the band than The Professor. It is definitely good, and some cuts outstanding. But I don't like it as well as, for exampe, Crawfish Fiesta for the flavor of Professor Longhair.
