Editorial Reviews

Omnivore Recordings and Zen Records go back in time to tell the story of the The Knack. Consisting of demo recordings made in 1973 and 1975, Rock & Roll is Good For You The Fieger/Averre Demos takes listeners to the genesis of Doug Fieger and Berton Averre's songwriting and recording partnership - One that lasted nearly four decades until Fieger's tragic passing in 2010. All 16 track are previously unissued and feature version of songs known ("Good Girls Don't" and "That's What The Little Girls Do," eventually recorded and released on Get The Knack) and unknown. There are even songs Knack fans will recognize in different versions, reworked or rewritten for later projects. A riff here, a hook there - it's a scavenger hunt for some and a blissful pop experience for others. This release is a fascinating look at how Doug's partnership with Berton helped steer a course from a more progressive 70s sound to the power-pop The Knack used to break discos hold on the airwaves with 1979s "My Sharona." Complete with previously unseen photos, liner notes and sourced from the original 1/4" tapes, Rock & Roll is Good For You: The Fieger/Averre Demos is a record power-pop fans have not only been waiting for, but will fully embrace.

4.0 out of 5 stars HALF of the KnacK is better than most..... September 13, 2012
Format:Audio CD
...other new music I hear these days. Actually I was surprised at how enjoyable these bare bones songs/demos are. It actually in some ways opens up the songs to hear them stripped down to bass, acoustic guitar , voice and lead fills. As a long time KnacK fan I admire Bruce Gary's drumming and Preston's bass playing but the core of the group for me was Doug as the main songwriter/singer and Berton as his foil so having their presence here is most welcome to my ears. There are some songs contained which eventually became full fledged KnacK tunes and others that obviously didn't but I can't say I found myself wanting to skip any of the tracks and enjoyed it all. Its actually not only enjoyable as an album in and of itself but also you can hear the eagerness and excitement as Doug records his songs... I hope they release more from his personal vaults if they have more from different eras. Doug's solo album is also HIGHLY recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars An unexpected look back February 13, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
While these demos aren't of great sound quality, they provide quite an eye-opening look into how the Knack came to be. As a long-time fan of the band, this is a treasure trove of material that offers a glimpse of the transition Doug Fieger made from Sky to the band that would become famous for the hit "My Sharona." Non-believers may as well pass this up, but if you're a fan of the Knack, it's a must-own.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK..."Sharona" DID kick disco in the @#$s December 7, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Still...you want Doug Fiegar's finest material? Forget this Knack/"power-pop" silliness, and go back to his original group, Sky. Specifically, have a listen to the song "(Bring It On Back) I Still Like To Rock And Roll" off their "Sailor's Delight" album. It's more "Stones" than even the Stones themselves since R Wood joined - and the track even has Bobby Keys, Jim Price, and Ian Stewart playing horns and piano respectively. I DARE YOU to find anything more "Stones-y" than that...
