5.0 out of 5 stars Oh my...
This is music. Ozma is what you get when you put Weezer and the Anniversary with a little bit of Saves the Day-ish lyrics/vocals (what's interesting is all these bands have toured together...) and that is an absolute great combo. The lyrics are the kind of lyrics Rivers cranked with Pinkerton; autobiographical, smart, intelligent, and weirdly humorous. Musically, Ozma are...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not half bad. More in the 45% bad range.
By the end of the first two songs on this album, I thought that I had found one of the greatest bands ever. What could be better than someone taking that unique twist of Weezer's sound and adding their own flavor to it? Well, when the album kept going, I found out exactly what could be better: actually listening to Weezer. This album is definetly fun to listen to here and...

Musically, Ozma are pretty heavy-boy, do they have BASS. I swear, the hidden talent in the band is the bass player (which is also the singer I think). Without the high singer and keys, the music would fit perfectly with any pop punk band. This kind of dynamic is what gives Ozma depth: light, fun for the Weezer kids, and the kind of music for the punkier kids. Lyrically, although no genius, the singer writes some great songs. I don't think any man cannot identify with Natalie Portman, the way he yells towards the end there, it's like, the kind of pain you go through. Then there's Ozma's "In Dreams", which is "Battlescars". It's the heaviest and mellowest song on the album, opening with a dreamlike harp/cello thingy, and then goes all out rock. The song cools down about two minutes before it actually ends, where there is an acoustic strumming of the melody to Domino Effect. Shootingstars seems to be about lost love in war, Baseball is a five minute precursor to Battlescars-it opens with a hum, climaxes with a band, and settles down before the sytnh-charged Rocks. The synth player has AMAZING talent: sometimes she plays the melody, weaving in and out of the guitar melody. The bass player is a great musician too: again, he weaves his melodies in the songs, but other times he's an independent structure. Appletrees uses puns like crazy, opens with strong bass, and is a rollicking journey throughout. In Search of 1988 is a rockin, 'good ole days' type song, very good. Rock and Roll Part Three should be doing something. Sadly, Ozma's only mainstream exposure was a short tour w/Weezer, but hopefully that will change. This is fun, insightful, personal, light stuff: like someone said, this is what bands used to do. If you like happy synth stuff (Anniversary, Weezer, The Faint, Reggie, Get Up Kids) you should like Ozma. Recommended highly...

5.0 out of 5 stars Better Than Weezer's Green Album, October 28, 2001

Ozma. You've probably heard the name followed by "weezer rip-off" but don't let these people fool you. I saw them with Weezer and the Get Up Kids and must admit that I was not impressed. After downloading "Natalie Portman", I was convinced that they were "pretty good." I took a chance, went out and bought Rock 'N' Roll Part 3, stuck it in my CD player, took a breath, hoped for the best, and pushed the play button. From the opening keyboard riff of "Domino Effect" I KNEW I was wrong about these guys. I listened as one great song followed another. I was particulary impressed with "Domino Effect", "Battlescars", and "The Last Dance". I recommened it to all my friends, and have several of them hooked too. Overall, this is a great buy, I personally think it's better than The Green Album by Weezer. Check this CD out, you won't be disappointed!!

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW. Is it love?, October 25, 2004
This review is from: Rock and Roll Part Three (Audio CD)
This CD rocks from Begining to End. It opens with An awesome guitar driven domino Effect that not only has a catchy and cool guitar riff but awesome lyrics. You would think it is my favorite but Every song on this CD is just so excellent that it is hard to choose. Some bands have CD's with a few good songs and some filler. Every song on this CD was Excellent. The Riffs are catchy and purposefull and the lyrics are clever and heart felt. It is just too bad the band broke up because I Went and bought all of there CD's after listening to this one and they don't have a single song i don't love. I also usually listen to bands such as NIN, Tool, APC,and the such so Pop rock had never crossed my ears. I have heard OZMA compared to Weezer and the band does draw insperation from Weezer but has a driving sound of there own that weezer began with but seems to have lost. I can not reccomend any CD more Except maybe Double DOnkey Disk which Is more Original And less inspired by Weezers early stuff. I like this CD more but Double DOnkey Disk gives you more of a unique sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Geek Rocks Greatest Hope: Ozma, August 23, 2001

Having long been selling this album independantly from their website ozmaonline.com, ozma's "Rock and Roll Part 3," now released on Kung Fu Records, is a brilliant work that easily could become a national hit with just a little airtime. Ozma's influences are clearly displayed with songs such as "Apple Trees" and "In Search of 1988," which convey heavy weezer influences (ozma formed as a weezer cover band,) yet the band is able to define itself with standout songs such as "Natalie Portman," "Battlescars," "Shooting Stars," and "Last Dance." These songs especially show us beyond a doubt that ozma's talent for lyrics, songwriting and performance more than exceed the skill posessed by the majority of bands today. Ozma's heartfelt lyrics, guitar prowess and multi-part songs are the perfect cure for any fan disallusioned with Weezers current album. "Rock and Roll Part 3" is what Rivers Cuomo and Weezer should have followed Pinkerton with. It comes as no surprise that Ozma had long been one of Cuomo's favorite bands.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Little Gem of an Album, February 2, 2006
This review is from: Rock and Roll Part Three (Audio CD)
This band is frequently compared to Weezer, but quite frankly, Weezer hasn't made an album this quirky or this catchy before. That's not to say that Ozma is a better band than Weezer, they just write some catchy tunes!

This is one of my favorite albums to come out of the whole new wave/emo explosion from the late 90s.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Weezer? Love genuinely awesome music? You'll love this!, November 24, 2005
This review is from: Rock and Roll Part Three (Audio CD)
I've always had a soft spot in my heart for "geek rock" as my friend and fan of Weezer and Ozma has called it! Ozma is just one of those bands that can be a soundtrack to your life and really mark events in your life through their songs. Who can't really remember past loves or loves they have right now with a song like "Shooting Stars"? There is just a raw, genuine, and humble quality that has always kept Ozma alive in my heart (even though they're broken up now, which is how I heard about them ironically from Weezer's site). The guitars are tight and awesomely talented, the bass is soultry and heartfelt, the drums are rad and smart, and the keyboards are the right touch of retro to make any Ozma song just about some of the best darn songs out there! The vocals are shared betweem Ryen(guitar) and Daniel(Bass) although Dan usually sings. Their lyrics are heartfelt and awesome! This band is, or was, just plain special and impossible not to like. Very few bands like Ozma come and go, and they will live on in the hearts of all of us true music lovers!
Peace,
Ty

5.0 out of 5 stars "Ive been dreamin about you ever since i woke up...", August 4, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Rock and Roll Part Three (Audio CD)
As a long-term weezer fan, i didnt think anything could compare. However, I got this CD as a present, so i thught id give it a shot. I'm so glad i did. They seem to perfectly grasp the instramental harmonies in a way that Weezer only really did in their early days. The Ups and Downs (my clear favorite)is witty and fun, and expresses the confusion that most people have after ending a relationship. Domino effect is a gorgeous song with gorgeous lyrix. Last Dance has a certain spunk to it that is amazing. Ozma is unique and unlike anything else out there, and i hope that they can be an insperation to more bands out there. BUY THIS CD!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Broken up....., September 25, 2004
This review is from: Rock and Roll Part Three (Audio CD)
Wow - what a downer. I was just at www.ozmaonline.com and learned that Ozma has called it quits. What a shame. This is truely a great band, and R&R Part 3 is their best work. I really believe these guys (and gal!) are better than Weezer and The Get Up Kids, who they are most often grouped with. You will not be disappointed with this disk.

I was introduced to Ozma through a friend who also loves Weezer. "They're like Weezer but more emo," I was told. Ozma was that and so much more. I absolutely adore this CD. In Search of 1988 was an instant favorite. Domino Effect has become my favorite song of Ozma's after many, many listens. Apple Trees is excellent. Natalie Portman is great. The Ups and Downs is amazing. If I Only Had a Heart - I just love this song. It's not deep, it's not insightful, but it's still great, and the little hook at the *very* end - a short little single note progression after some heavy chords - makes me smile every time I hear it. Baseball, Rocks, and Battlescars are wonderful.

It's just a great cd. They do have a Weezer-esque influence, but they are certainly no Weezer clone. It's great rock. It's excellent music. It will be stuck in your head for days on end. Trust me - Rock and Roll Part Three will not disappoint.
