Biography

Johnny Winter is an American music legend. Since his first appearance on the pages of Rolling Stone in 1968, Johnny has epitomized the fiery and flamboyant rock and roll guitar hero. Yet Johnny has continually returned to the blues roots from which his music sprang. Between 1968 and 1980, he cut fifteen albums that define the blues-rock form, ranging from the raw power of ROCK AND ROLL HOOCHIE COO… Read more in Amazon's Johnny Winter Store

This review is from: Rock & Roll People (Audio CD)
This is a great CD to pickup if your looking for a sample of what Johnny did over his mid career 1973-80. It's a must for Johhny fans waiting for unreleased Blue Sky recordings to be reissued. At under seven bucks it's a STEAL!!!

Stray Cat Blues, Bony Maronie and Thirty Days - from Saints & Sinners; still available. Audio on these cuts actually seems better to me then the Saints & Sinners CD.

Still Alive & Well - from Still, Alive & Well; still available.

The above cuts are all excellent. If you like them you will love the complete CDs they are from.

Now, the reason I purchased this CD is for the tracks no longer available on the original issue lp recordings as follows -

Rock & Roll People from John Dawson Winter III - This is Johnny's last super rock star studio release. Many of the tunes on this studio lp are performed live on the Captured Live CD. Pure rock & roll, I love this tune written by John Lennon. The audio quality of this tune is the poorest of the tunes on the CD but it is still not bad. Actually, since John Dawson Winter III is not available it is dificult to compare to the original lp. It has been over thirty years since I listened to the orignal lp.

Let The Good Times Roll is a live tune from the live lp Winter Together. I found this lp new, bought it and played it once to transfer to CD. This is a great rock tune written by brother Edgar and performed as a duet with Edgar and what I call the Winter super group. This live performance included both Edgar's and Johnny's bands at the time.

Walking By Myself & Honest I Do from White, Hot & Blue are excellent. Walking By Myself is an EXCELLENT blues number that Johnny rocks the only way Johnny can. Honest I Do is a long running layed back country tune.

Don't Hide Your Love & Like A Rolling Stone from Raisin' Cain are also excellent. Don't Hide Your Love is a rocker and Like A Rolling Stone is the Bob Dylan classic. Johnny really shines on this one laying down multiple guitar solos one over the other backing Johnny's vocal. I am not a big Dylan fan, I am a huge Winter fan, but in my humble opinion Johnny's version is superior musically and Johnny pulls off the vocal very well.

The audio quality is very good on all cuts.

Additional tracks from Raisin' Cain and White Hot & Blue can be obtained by purchasing the White Hot Blues collection.

I often wonder why these recordings are not re-released remastered in Legacy Editions. Even if there is not additional tracks they could combine Raisin' Cain and White Hot & Blue as one CD and charge close to thirty for it. Winter Together would be huge if they could find additional concert material. I would imagine that both Edgar & Rick Derringer performed some of their solo stuff as well as Johnny climaxing with all on stage at once (that may just be my dream). John Dawson Winter III would be huge by itself. Then it dawned on me the other day, and this may seem really cold, but the conspiracy theorist in me wonders if some record label fat cat somewhere is waiting for the living legend to die. I sure hope not, I hope they remember, "You can't get good from evil, so do the best you can."

Get this CD while you can! A great budget $ CD from SONY MUSIC SPECIAL PRODUCTS. I say this because these budget CD's do not hang around long in production. This 10 track CD collects some of the GIT SLINGER'S best CBS years recordings. Some are still not available from CBS in the original album/CD form they were first issued in. Bob Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone", John Lennon's "Rock & Roll People", The Stones "Stray Cat Blues" & "Still Alive & Well" makes this CD a must for any old Johnny fan and a great introduction to Johnny Winter's music/Git playing for any new fan. Sound quality is very good. A+
