More About the Author

Bob Gruen is one of the most well-known and respected photographers in rock and roll. From John Lennon to Johnny Rotten; Muddy Waters to the Rolling Stones; Elvis to Madonna; Bob Dylan to Bob Marley; Tina Turner to Debbie Harry, he has captured the music scene for over forty years in photographs that have gained worldwide recognition.

Shortly after John Lennon moved to New York in 1971, Bob became John and Yoko's personal photographer and friend, making photos of their working life as well as private moments. In 1974 he created the iconic images of John Lennon wearing a New York City t-shirt and, standing in front of the Statue of Liberty making the peace sign - two of the most popular of Lennon's images.

Bob has worked with major rock acts such as Led Zeppelin, The Who, David Bowie, Tina Turner, Elton John, Aerosmith, Kiss & Alice Cooper. He toured extensively with the emerging punk and new wave bands including the New York Dolls, Sex Pistols, Clash, Ramones, Patti Smith Group and Blondie.

His "Sid Vicious with Hot Dog" photo was acquired in 1999 by The National Portrait Gallery, London, for their permanent collection. In June 2004 Bob was presented with MOJO Magazine's prestigious Honours List Award for Classic Image in London. "All Dolled Up," a DVD documentary made by Bob Gruen and Nadya Beck of their early '70s video footage of the New York Dolls, was released in 2005.

In the spring of 2007 FAAP University in Sao Paulo, Brazil presented an exhibition of Bob Gruen's work. Titled ROCKERS, the exhibition attracted 40,000 visitors. The ROCKERS exhibition was also shown from April to July 2008 at Morrison Hotel Gallery on the Bowery in New York City.In November 2010 Bob was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame.

Bob is one of the few rock photographers who was as much a member of the New York scene as he was a documentarian of it. His life's work collected in this book is simply astounding. To cruise through the pages of this book is to live the life of the New York rock scene as it was seen from the eyes of it's greatest historian. So many of these pictures have become cultural icons, from the John Lennon "New York City" photo, to KISS in suits, to Led Zeppelin in front of their plane, to Sid Vicious with a hot dog smeared all over his face, every image in this book is a classic. For lovers of rock, and for music fans worldwide, buy this book, it's really great!

What a fantastic collection of photographs of some of the great stars of rock. They are truly legends in the music world. They don't make them like that anymore. The photos of Ike & Tina were awsome. I remember seeing them perform in their heyday over 40 years ago back in San Francisco and Milwaukee. A wonderful publication for anyone's library.

There are so many (picture) books that describe the infinitely holy gospel of Rock n Roll,
however there is currently only one genuine original photographer, who catch
all prophets in his lens, and that's Bob Gruen, What a great book and very nice pictures.

Without a doubt Bob Gruen is rock music's best photographer. The combination of knowing when to take the picture and his ability to move comfortably among the artists at the right time and the right place makes every photo in this book a masterpiece. It helps if you have a love for the New York music scene that exploded through CBGBs and Max's Kansas City in the seventies, other wise you might not be that thrilled about fabulous shots of the Heartbreakers, Dictators and the Dead Boys. Still, there are plenty of stunning photos of the Stones, Zeppelin, Tina Turner, Lennon, etc., etc. for you to revel in. Many pictures were posed, but the best are the candid moments preserved forever when the stars let Bob catch them off guard. This book belongs in your home.
