5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVED this movie!
Not since Anchorman have I seen a movie with more quotable lines. Patrick Warburton is perfect as Rock Slyde. The movie is funny, not just with clever dialog but with visual gags as well. 3.0 out of 5 stars Warburton can't save this story, but Andy Dick comes close
I had to watch this because the role of a private eye seemed just right for Patrick Warburton, whose wry, clueless delivery was hysterical in the short-lived super hero series The Tick, and steals the show in his current TV series Rules of Engagement. As it turned out though, Warburton's character in this film lacks the witty writing and assertive personality that make...

5.0 out of 5 stars Comic Genius-Patrick Ricketts [...], May 18, 2010
This review is from: Rock Slyde Private Eye (DVD)
I was looking forward to seeing this for a number of reasons, first off I am a big fan of Patrick Warburton. For a big man you would think he is going to be some menacing character but his comedic talent is brilliant and he really shines as Rock Slyde. Also Andy Dick is hilarious here as the owner of a quasi-religious cult, he begins a turf war with Rock Slyde that leads to one over-the-top scene after another. The film takes a poke at the film-noir genre making for a refreshing and original romp. This type of slap-stick comedy might not be for everyone but for those that "get it" this is a gem that demands multiple viewings. There are too many memorable scenes and dialogue in the film to even mention but to do so would only ruin the film for those wanting to see it. The is the debut feature film of Writer/Director, Chris Dowling, impressive is putting it mildly here because Chris has create a comedy his first time out that others in his art only dream of making. I had to watch this twice because after it's brisk pacing ended in 86 minutes I was left wanting more and the second time around I caught things I missed the first time around and I had just as much fun watching the film as I did the first time. It takes a complete effort to make a film such as this successful and it seems like everyone was up to the challenge, everything from the sets to the score were perfect. The film also contains some surprising but pleasant cameos a long the way as well. The film belongs to Patrick and Andy but the entire cast delivers on every level. If you like comedy then this is a film that should not be missed. Rock Slyde is off-the-wall fun that breaths new life into a stagnant comedy genre. This is the type of film that gains instant cult status and once you see it you are going to be telling friends and family about it. I highly recommend owning one of the best comedies to come out in a a very long time. Chris Dowling is a Director to keep your eye on and I for one look forward to seeing what he has up is sleeve next. [...]

This review is from: Rock Slyde (Amazon Instant Video)
Rock SlydeAfter watching this film, I am a bit bummed I missed it in the theaters. This movie was hilarious. Patrick Warburton is one of my favorite actors so I had to purchase the film. I laughed the entire film. Generally I don't like films with dry humor but this is one for the ages!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great genre spoof, August 26, 2010

This review is from: Rock Slyde Private Eye (DVD)
Ah, at last, another great genre spoof. It's been a long time since one of these came along. I'm talking about the movies that are inherently funny by making fun of a particular film style and setting, without having to deliberately poke fun at other existing movies. Think Airplane, the Naked Gun, even some aspects of Hot Shots. Not the newer ones (starting with Scary Movie) that just throw one deliberate movie spoof after another at you.

Fair warning though, this movie's clever, but also corny at times. Me, I love corny jokes, so I had a blast watching the film. Some of the jokes are hit or miss, but there's plenty of 'em to enjoy. :)

You can also tell that they had a fun time making the film, which adds to the experience. For example, they brought in a bunch of friends for some bizarre and hilarious celebrity cameos (Jason Alexander, Eric Roberts, Lea Thompson and others). For a fun game try playing "find Brian Bosworth", hehe.

All in all, a fun movie to add to your DVD collection. Don't go into it expecting anything terribly serious, and just enjoy the ride that they take you on. Patrick Warburton is a delight to watch, and it's awesome seeing the voice of Family Guy's Joe Swanson doing something other than just voiceover. Recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Warburton can't save this story, but Andy Dick comes close, July 2, 2010
This review is from: Rock Slyde Private Eye (DVD)
I had to watch this because the role of a private eye seemed just right for Patrick Warburton, whose wry, clueless delivery was hysterical in the short-lived super hero series The Tick, and steals the show in his current TV series Rules of Engagement. As it turned out though, Warburton's character in this film lacks the witty writing and assertive personality that make his other roles so hysterical. Instead Slyde is a listless divorcé who can't seem to be aroused to anger or passion by anything.

The movie's most inspired humor is found in the villainous "Bart" played by Andy Dick. Bart is the founder of "Bartology," a cult which brainwashes its converts with spiked cookies while cleaning out their bank accounts. Despite global ambitions Bart is fixated with taking over Slyde's office space so he can control the entire office building that houses his headquarters.

I got through it and had plenty of laughs along the way, but the slow pacing and emptiness of the title character, especially during act one, almost had me reaching for the fast forward button so I could get to more Bart scenes.

1.0 out of 5 stars Memorably Boring, September 6, 2010
This review is from: Rock Slyde Private Eye (DVD)
(1.) Memorably boring but a great sleep aide. So good I used it twice on two separate nights.
(2.) I am going to tell my tortoise friends to watch this paced-to-their-liking flick.
(3.) Particularly impressed with the primary use of two settings for the majority of the movie - office 1 and office 2.
(4.) Brief (translate seconds) cameo appearances by actors with no jobs in need of some quick cash who want to get their money and get out quickly. These cameos consisted of a TV actor nobody has ever heard of; another mostly TV actor with some very sad B movie credits; a singer nobody has ever heard of; Brian Bosworth that everyone wishes they hadn't heard of.
(5.) If this is slap stick comedy then I need to review my 1930s pie-in-the-face and tripping-over-everything skits. Same level but now juvenilely passé.
(6.) The so called comedic lines moved slower than molasses in Antarctica (and the lines were equally as dumb as that imagery).
(7.) Anyone that needs to watch this twice to catch all the subtleties needs some serious help.
