5.0 out of 5 stars An Eclectic, Intelligent Album, May 18, 2004

I discovered Julian when he recently opened at an Aimee Mann show. After enjoying his set, I found more than a few songs really stuck with me and decided to purchase his cd, "Rock Star" I am so glad that I discovered this album as it is quickly becoming one of my favorites and has been playing almost non stop since I got it.

What makes this album so incredible to me is how eclectic it is. Like most albums I enjoy, it of course met my prerequisite for literate and thought provoking lyrics and well fitted melodies. But where I feel Julian has exceeded the norm with this album is in how nearly every song is of a different style-and amazingly, he pulls this off brilliantly.

As you can tell,I highly recommend this album. If you're looking for something new and want an album that is almost guaranteed to get you thinking/feeling and excited...this is it.

Kudos, Julian.

I'll keep this short: This is a stunning cd, one of the best of the year already. Echoes of Brian Wilson, Queen, Rundgren, Simon and Garfunkle all mixed with smart ass, soul searching depressive lyrics that fit like a glove! Strong melody, great hooks, top notch singing and guitar playing (duh!) help put this in a class with Tiny Volcano, Pearlfishers, Wondermints and Dada, those pop bands that are head and shoulders above the rest. Right up there with the latest Fountains of Wayne record. Buy this immediately!

5.0 out of 5 stars You owe it to yourself to own this CD, December 25, 2007
This review is from: Rock Star (Audio CD)
I'll be short and direct. This CD is a must have for anyone who digs great songs, great musicians and great delivery.

There should have been some hits from this CD, but they are probably just a little too smart for mainstream.

He has become one of my favorite singer/songwriters. He deserves to be heard. Just buy it, trust me.

I first became acquainted with Julian Coryell as an opening act last year for Richard Thompson at a local concert venue. He was captivating - literally a one-man band, though (at least in concert) not quite the guitar virtuoso Thompson was. But I was impressed enough to buy his album, and I've listened to it ever since. It's a richly-produced CD (and as Todd Rundgren and Paul McCartney have done, he plays virtually all the intstruments here) and his pop influences are obvious, running the gamut from Queen to McCartney to the Beach Boys. This is a very enjoyable album, with solid songwriting, instrumentation and vocals throughout. Highlights are the title track, "Did you See the Sun", "Day Off", and the wickedly funny song whose title can't be printed here. This one will undoubtably slip under the radar, but it deserves much better. Highly recommended.
