Movie rocks, soundtracks rocks!,
By Matthew Vierling (Cordova, TN United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rock Star (Audio CD)
First, Steelheart is NOT Steel Dragon (although Steelheart's singer does sing some of the songs). Second, Mark Walberg didn't sing in the movie - he lip-synched everything over the vocals of Mike Matijevic (Steelheart) or Jeff Scott Soto. Still, I think he gave an incredible performance in the movie. Steel Dragon (the fictional band in the movie) is in reality Zakk Wylde (Ozzy Osbourne's guitarist), Jeff Pilson (Dokken's bass player), and Jason Bonham (the son of Led Zepplin's drummer), and Nick Cantonese (guitar). These musicians also appear in the movie, and do a good job. The six Steel Dragon songs on the soundtrack are solid and raucous and anthemic, with plenty of melodic hooks, screaming guitars solos, and lots of bottom end bass and drums. Steel Dragon covers the old Ritchie Blackmore/Ronnie James Dio song "Long Live Rock and Roll." The great legendary Sammy Hagar even wrote one of the songs - Stand Up - performed by Steel Dragon. Modern bands such as Everclear and The Verve Pipe adds songs to the CD, along with 80s rockers like Bon Jovi, Ted Nugent, Motley Crue and KISS.

Gimme, Gimme, More Rock and Roll!!!,
By Charles Tucker (Baltimore, MD United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rock Star (Audio CD)
True rock and roll will never fade away. Mark Walberg did not do the singing for the film, dispite some articles saying hetook lessons and did his own singing. Thankfully, the movie producers went on a worldwide search to find the best 80's style rock and roll musicians. The soundtrack has a great line up with Kiss, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, The Verve Pipe, and many more. What stood out to me was that the producers put together a band, who never played together before, and pulled it off brilliantly. Steel Dragon has two lead singers, Mike Matijevic and Jeff Scott Soto. Most people have never heard of these guys. Mike Matijevic was in a band called Steelheart, and the band split up after piece of the stage fell on him, causing him to be hospitalized for a number of months, after a 100% recovery, the band was no more. His voice has such range, and is clear at all volumes, quite amazing considering the style of music. His top single was "I'll Never Let You Go", that song is what most people remember him by. Jeff Scott Soto did a lot of cover band work, singing Ozzy tunes and such. He sounds like Gene Simmons of Kiss a little bit, and has a great voice that compliments Mike Matijevic's range and contol. All things said, if you like great vocals, heavy metal or hard rock, new, and never been over played on the radio kind of music, than this album is right for you. Lets all hope that when Mark Walburg promotes the film as the lead vocalist, he gives some credit to Mike Matijevic and Jeff Scott Soto for providing such heart pounding, high screaming, and true 80's heavy metal rock'in, that make this album a must have for anyone who likes to rock!!

The Greatest Soundtrack Ever!,
By
This review is from: Rock Star (Audio CD)
After seeing the hit movie, "Rock Star" I longed to get my hands on the phenomenal soundtrack. Remember all those excellent songs you heard in the movie done by Steel Dragon? All of those songs are included on this soundtrack (Livin The Life, We All Die Young, Blood Pollution, Stand Up, Wasted Generation and Long Live Rock and Roll). Those tunes are outstanding done by the real band. Included in the soundtrack are outstanding tunes by other famous Heavy Metal bands such as KISS with "Lick It Up", Motley Crue with "Wild Side", Bon Jovi with "Livin On A Prayer" and many more. And remember that song Mark Wahlberg sang at the end with his band in that night club "Colorful." That song is here, too and that song is outstanding.
This soundtrack is the ultimate. It's pure rock and roll, has out-of-this-world guitar riffs, banging drum beats and outstanding vocal performances by all the contributing singers. For those people that love the movie, now own this CD. I got this for Christmas and absolutely love it.

Producer ruined this album,
By Ken G. (Houston, TX United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rock Star (Audio CD)
After watching the movie and hearing the new Steel Dragon tunes, many of which are performed "live" at various arenas, I knew I had to have this soundtrack. The new tunes are incredibly indicative of the period, and most are are really, really good songs. So I head to the store and buy the soundtrack...and suffer a major disappointment. Instead of hearing the raw, powerful, straight-ahead 80's rock-n-roll that I heard in the movie, I was confronted with a collection of synth-laden, over-produced garbage that barely resembled the songs from the movie. I can only compare my disappointment to the feeling I get when I hear Whitesnakes "Here I go again" on the radio, only to find that it's the "pop" version that adds snyth and cuts out most of the guitar solo. Sorry, but I don't have time for this pseudo-rock pop garbage, the kind that helped to destroy 80's metal. If you're a fan of 80's metal, see the movie. It's mostly lame, but the music makes it worth watching. I can't recommend the soundtrack, however, unless you're looking for a classic example of what went wrong.

BIG SCORE FOR "STEEL DRAGON"!,
By Antoinette Avalon (USA) - See all my reviews

The soundtrack for the movie "Rock Star" has it's best moments in the songs by the band Steel Dragon . . . which is technically a non-existent band except for in the movie. What you're hearing there is the vocalist from the band Steelheart, Michael Matijevic. As the voice of Steelheart, Matijevic had precious little competition as far as sheer range ability within melodic hard rock bands in the 80's and 90's. The only vocalists that could give him a run for his money were (and are) Sebastian Bach (former SKID ROW vocalist) and Andrew Elt (Sleeze Beez vocalist) in my opinion. Matijevic's vocal prowess made him an excellent choice to be the voice of the movie band Steel Dragon. The other songs on the album are all pretty standard 80's fare and a nice trip down memory lane for those of us who bought the involved albums when they were first released back then. But this album's strength is in the new tracks. I don't 100% agree with which tracks made the soundtrack album overall, but regardless, I would recommend this album. Hopefully this will be a first step towards hearing Matijevic back in the recording studio for real!

AWESOME MOVIE AND SOUNDTRACK,

I didn't get to see Rock Star in the movies so I was waiting anxiously for it to come on DVD. Last weekend I finally got to watch it and not only did i LOVE the movie, the MUSIC was THE BEST! I grew up listening to all of the 80's heavy metal / hair bands and I have to say this soundtrack is just pumping! I'm listening to it right now! :) The high pitched vocals and the guitar playing / metal sound was bringing me back into the 80s all over again! I'm glad to say that they brought some of this music back in 2000 when they came out with this movie. Every song is superb....from Bon Jovi, Kiss, etc...but I'm really enjoying the Steel Dragon Songs the best, especially "Stand Up and Shout" and "We All Die Young." The movie also rocked!! Mark Walhberg was an awesome actor and I LOVED Dominic West's performance as Kirk Cuddy!! He is an outstanding actor...(can't stop watching him and love his accent!) For you 80's heavy metal fans.....get the CD....it's worth every penny!!

"Colorful" return!,
By
This review is from: Rock Star (Audio CD)
This is a splendid Soundtrack compilation encompassing all that we know and love about 1980's Heavy Metal. What better songs to typify that great era than "wild Side", "Lick It Up', and "Livin' on a Prayer"?The shining moment, though, is provided by Michigan platinum Pop rockers The Verve Pipe whose gem "Colorful" closes the album in fine fashion. I can't imagine seeing Mark Walburg lip-synch (on film) over Brian Vander Ark's tender and very emotional vocals on this entrancing and emotionally-moving piece. Very similar in style and nature to the band's 1997 breakthrough hit "The Freshmen". A very fine return to form for this band! So glad it was included among the "heavier" songs here. Though this song is far from Metal it is so heavy in an altogether different emotional way that it surely belongs. The 5 Steel Dragon originals personify the well-known style of the 1980's and are brilliant (though they sound dated which can be a very good thing in this instance). And they should be since they were penned by such authorities as Sammy Hagar, Autograph's Steve Plunkett and Desmond Child. One is a great power ballad (of course, since these were a staple of the "Hair Band" craze) "We All Die Young". Also the heavy "Blood Pollution" which is the song the tribute band in the film (featuring The Verve Pipe's Brian Vander Ark) took their name from. A fitting cover of the appropriately titled classic "Long Live Rock and Roll" is given the Steel Dragon 2001 treatment making a total of 6 new SD songs included. For those unaware, Steel Dragon features 80's metal alumni Zach Wylde, Jeff Pilson, Jason Bonham, Nick Catanese and vocalists Jeff Scott Soto and Mike Matijevic. A true all-star Metal band of the highest caliber to say the least. Playing the music they love, no doubt. Any collection including quality KISS, Bon Jovi and Motley Crue 1980's classics is guaranteed to sell based on that fact alone. But leave it to The Verve Pipe to provide the soundtrack's most enticing cut both lyrically and musically in 2001. "The show is over close the storybook, there will be no encore..."

The best heavy metal soundtrack since Trick or Treat (1986). Steel Dragon rocks! Steel Dragon, unfortunetly a band that does not exist, trumble the world with two amazing voices: Mike Matijevic's (from Steelheart) and Jeff Scott Soto's (from Talisman). Mike does the backvocals on Stand Up and lead We All Die Young, Blood Pollution and Long Live Rock N Roll. Jeff shines on Stand Up and Wasted Generation. This CD holds the best perfomance of Jeff's whole career. You won't find anything like this in his Talisman or solo albuns. From Mike, check his first two Steelheart albuns out. They rock!! Amazing band. Mike has one of the best metal voices since Dave King left Fastway! And, of course, you also take home Zakk Wylde's guitar riffs. He is the best guitarrist there is ou there. Man, Steel Dragon is the band of our dreams! You guys should stick together!! A must have...

I know Steel Dragon is a fictitious band put together for this movie, but Damn they rock! Dio, Deep Purple, Judas Priest...they bring back the power and the glory of 70's heavy metal.Zakk Wylde's playing is better than anything he's done with Ozzy, Jason Bonham kicks it out and Jeff Scott Soto is flat out one of rocks best vocalist. I would love for these guys to put out another album under the Steel Dragon name ala Spinal Tap. Yeah there are a few weak tracks, but skip the filler and go to the killer; you won't be sorry.

The 6 "Steel Dragon" tunes on this record are absolutely phenomenal. Performed by virtuosos Zakk Wylde, Jeff Pilson, Jason Bonham, & co., they're the most legit rock & roll recorded in the past decade (during which time we've been inundated with wimpy, whiny rock).Get this CD!!! |
