4.0 out of 5 stars Quite a few surprises here!!, May 11, 2004

This review is from: Rock Steady Classics / The Best of The Tennors (Audio CD)
Like one of the other reviewers, I knew of The Tennors through "Weather Report" - an almost embarrassingly sweet song that is very difficult to get out of one's head. I've a tape of it somewhere...having recorded it in the mid 80's from college radio. Anyway, I decided I wanted a copy on CD. DO NOT HESITATE TO GET THIS DISC! - especially if you like late 60's rocksteady (ie. Meditations, ethiopians, etc). For the casual listener of Bob Marley, I might recommend another compilation. About half the songs on this CD are "classic" in my mind. In addition to "Weather Report", "I Want Everything" is jammed in my head like a splinter! Absolutely great!! Just to let you know where I'm coming from, my favorite group from the rocksteady era is The Ethiopians. Other great songs..."Another Scorcher", "Pressure & Slide", "Massi Massa", " Sufferer", and "Traitor" deserve to be in any enthusiast's collection. Better than most compilations or Best-of-CD's out there. The Tennor's are an underated group! Lee Perry, Augustus Pablo, etc....all fabulous in my mind, but it is these undiscovered gems that have kept me interested in early reggae for over 20 years! Is there no end to this goldmine? Hopefully not!

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than I thought it would be., September 2, 2002
This review is from: Rock Steady Classics / The Best of The Tennors (Audio CD)
I first heard the Tennors' "Weather Report" (a loose cover/interpretation of Simon and Garfunkels "The Only Living Boy in New York") on a local Reggae show. It haunted me and I had to have my own copy, even if it meant buying an entire album for only one song.
The cover of this album looks low budget/cheesy/chintzy but the music inside is rock solid Rock Steady. The inside liner notes detailing the history of the group (financial tribulations and the accidental death of one of the members) reads like a Shakespearean tradegy.
This album is a must have for Rock Steady fans...

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a fun, sunny afternoon CD., July 19, 1999

The Tennors harmonize like angels over a sweet rock steady beat. Not as frantic as ska, rock steady makes you feel like dancing, or working in the garden, or washing the car, or going to the beach...all the while reminiscing about innocent summers gone by, lovers lost and found therein. Some songs may be more memorable than others here, but the whole selection makes you feel really good; even the sad songs are hopeful and sweet. A product of the late 60's, like myself...this music has heart and warmth galore. I highly recommend.
