5.0 out of 5 stars Can I give it a 10?, October 4, 2001

You want the best? Well here he is. I've grown up listening to George Jones and one thing that you can always bet on, is that with each album, he's gonna keep going strong and getting better. While "getting better" may be putting it wrong (how could he ever top "Who's gonna fill their shoes?"), he certainly never falters. At 70 years old, his voice still shines and can still knock me through the wall. George Jones has seen and done more than any living rock star and has lived to tell about it (not unlike Johnny Cash). Tearing the plastic off the cd and putting it in my player, I felt instantly at home with "the rock". His albums all have that familiar tone yet he takes you throug a different experience with each tune.

To all the younger generation out there (I'm one of 'em) who want to hear some music played with real talent and compassion, pick up a George Jones or Merle Haggard album. Those guys are the real deal and put all of today's pretenders to shame. Disregard what your friends say about country music and form your own opinion. Listening to country music won't make you a hick, people.

If you're a long-time Jones fan, what are you waiting for? Go get it now. If you're new to country and want a real musical experience, look no further. If you don't love "Wood and Wire", then you don't have a soul. Damn, this is good.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE ROCK- GEORGE JONES NEVER SOUNDED BETTER!, October 4, 2001
By
This review is from: The Rock: Stone Cold Country 2001 (Audio CD)
I've been waiting for this cd for 2 years, ever since the release of "Cold Hard Truth" the Possum's last cd, I've been looking forward to his new album. I have NOT been let down! No way! This cd is a must for all George Jones Fans, and the casual country music fan. At 70 his voice sounds more rich & pure than ever. The songs picked on this cd are golden. "The Rock" is spellbinding, "Beer Run" shows Jones & Garth Brooks having a ball! This cd is a good balance of uptempo songs & ballads that are George Jones trademark. "Honey Hush" is an absolute favorite of mine, as well as "Tramp On Your Street". I dearly hope the Possum's voice never let's him down. On this new release, he hits all the high & low notes, no one does it better than the incomparable GEORGE GLENN JONES. Now if only this cd can go straight to #1 on the charts, then the Possum will get well deserved recognition. He will never need a rocking'chair!

5.0 out of 5 stars THERE IS JONES AND THEN THERE IS THE REST, October 8, 2001

George is no doubt on another level and noone will ever come close to touching him! At 70 years old he is still able to take Garth out behind the wood shed and give him a gool ol whipping!
This man is fighting the cause for all of us TRUE country fans and we all need to do our part and show him how thankful we are to still have the KING of country music still around. Believe me, after hearing the first song(The Rock) you will be in honky tonk heaven. This makes the sixth decade that Jones has graced us with his voice and after hearing this album there is no doubt that he is just getting started. THE LEGEND LIVES ON!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stone Cold Country!, October 9, 2001
This review is from: The Rock: Stone Cold Country 2001 (Audio CD)
If you are a country music fan I highly recommend you buy this
CD. Even at age 70, George Jones voice is still amazing. All
12 tracks are very well produced. Standout tracks for me include
"Beer run" (duet with Garth Brooks), "Wood and Wire", "The man he
was" and "Tramp on your street". I have a feeling the ole possum is
gonna get alot of country radio airplay out of this CD!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Possum does it again!..., October 3, 2001

I have almost all of George's songs and this album is his best yet. It could almost be compared to his 1980 comeback album "I Am What I Am." The song "50,000 Names" is especially chilling considering the state of the nation now. I think one of the strongest songs on the cd is "I Am." If you want to hear good ol' honky tonk songs and classic George, buy this CD. Long live George!

Here is another CD that will be one of George's greatest. Every song on this CD will bring tears to your eyes, especially 50,000 Names. Every time I play this CD I think it is his very best and I have almost everything he has ever recorded. His voice just keeps getting better. This CD is a must have for anyone who loves country music and George Jones.

4.0 out of 5 stars Legend still going strong, October 23, 2001
By
This review is from: The Rock: Stone Cold Country 2001 (Audio CD)
At 70 years old, George Jones' voice retains the wonderful warmth and vitality that he has displayed throughout his long career. Still entirely capable of improving every song he sings (the mark of a truly great singer) Jones' trademark note-bending vocals make this CD an essential purchase from anyone claiming to be a country music fan. The big draw in terms of generating sales is, of course, the duet with Garth Brooks, Beer Run. I remember reading a quote by Brooks a few years ago when, asked if he would ever duet with Jones, Brooks replied that it would, for him, be "vocal suicide". His fears were well-placed as Jones effortessly outclasses the biggest album seller in music history on a fun track that recalls Jones' own White Lightning. I was astonished by the sense of energy that Jones put into the fast-paced I Got Everything - he really can rock with the best of them, regardless of age. The ballad side of Jones is well represented with quality material including The Man He Was, Half Over You and the superb Honey Hush. The final song on the CD, a cover of Billy Joe Shaver's Tramp In Your Street, is an outstanding version which once and for all cements Jones' position as the greatest true country singer...ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Possum comes through again!, October 13, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Rock: Stone Cold Country 2001 (Audio CD)
The spectrum of songs don't take the fullest advantage of George's remarkable voice, as did his last album, the Cold Hard Truth, but this album is a winner. More upbeat than the Cold Hard Truth. Despite the publicity given to George's duet with Garth Brooks, this is far from being the strongest song. There is no reason at all why several of these songs should not get radio play on country stations... but of course they won't.

I hope that shinnagins with record labels won't interfere again with George Jone's album output. His voice still seems pretty close to its peak - we need to get that voice down as much as possible, even though we know ol' George will still be singing at 80!

5.0 out of 5 stars This Possum is alive and well!, September 6, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Rock: Stone Cold Country 2001 (Audio CD)
George Jones is simply the King of Country Music. There is no other way to put it. George has done, and continues to do (at 70 yrs old), what so many of today's pretenders cannot. He has "lived" so many of his songs, and his God-given voice just seems to get better and better with age. Although "Choices" (from "Cold Hard Truth") may be his strongest song in recent years, this album has enough "killers" to easily justify it's purchase.

"Half Over You", "I Am" and "The Rock" are the strongest cuts. "I Got Everything" has a simple truthful message, even though it is packaged in a fun-loving, toe-taping way (Shades of "White Lightning"!). There really aren't any weak cuts, but........why George did the duet with Garth Brooks is beyond me. The song ("Beer Run") is terrible, which is not that surprising. But George has earned his place as Country's greatest, so who am I to question his motives?

If you love "real" country, buy this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars You just get better with time!!!!, November 22, 2001
By
This review is from: The Rock: Stone Cold Country 2001 (Audio CD)
I bought the CD and I give it a 5 stars. I love to hear George's voice. I always know that the songs he sings are real.
They tell a story. They make you feel something. I have never yet bought a George Jones Album that I have in time stopped listening to. If I have had it 1 year or 10 years I still listen to all of them. I think alot of singers are more interested in how many albums they put out each year instead of the quality of the album. On day when I was buying CD's my daughter said mama you have enough CD's by him. My response was you can never get enough George Jones CD's!!!!!! I seen where someone only gave the album 4 stars. There finger must have slipped off the 5 and hit the 4 by mistake. I don't type to well myself but they should be more careful. It makes them look bad when they don't give credit where credit is due! I can't wait till your next album comes out.
