5.0 out of 5 stars Great 80's Stuff!, May 22, 2000

This review is from: Rock & Wave V.1 (Audio CD)
I originally picked this up because it had the Mission U.K.'s "Like a Hurricane" and a few others I recognized but I was really surprised when I heard it! There was so much that remembered from my youth... if anyone watched 120 Minutes on MTV in the early/late 80's, you will recognize this stuff. I believe this is a German import, so there is stuff that was new to me... (i.e. - Grauzone - "Eisbar") but most of it I was familiar with. It's a shame Amazon doesn't list the artists with this.. more people might pick it up if they realized who did what. The coolest thing about this disk is that you have songs like the Clash's "London Calling", the Smiths' "Panic", and Elvis Costello's "Oliver's Army" along side semi-obscure tracks like the Stranglers' "Skin Deep", Tubeway Army's (Gary Numan) "Are Friends Electric?", and Killing Joke's "Love Like Blood". All and all, if you're in the mid to late 20's and were a fan of the so called "alternative" (I hate that word...) scene of the early to late 80's, then these discs are for you! The liner notes are all in German but from the looks of them, they're pretty descriptive and there are some cool pics to boot! Oh, get this if you've been looking for some good 80's comps but got sick of listening to "Come On Eileen" for the 100th time! Ahhhh the memories!

I took a leap of faith, and bought this on Amazon without knowing what songs were included. I am not disappointed. Perhaps this transcript will help the next person to make a more informed decision though:

PUBLIC IMAGE LIMITED: this is not a love song (4:28)

TENPOLE TUDOR: swords of a thousand men (2:54)
KING KURT: destination zululand (3:24)
BOW WOW WOW: i want candy (2:41)
ADAM & THE ANTS: goody two shoes (3:29)
BLONDIE: denis (2:14)
ELVIS COSTELLO: oliver's army (2:55)
IAN DURY & THE BLOCKHEADS: hit me with your rhythm stick (3:42)

TUBEWAY ARMY: are friends electric? (5:15)

Made in Austria; liner notes are all in German. How cool is that?!? Black & white booklet includes pages on Adam Ant, the Clash, the Smiths, Blondie, the Stranglers, Sisters of Mercy, Joy Division, Ian Dury, Elvis Costello, and Tubeway Army. Great song selection, certainly an above-average eighties compilation ... although you could certainly track down many of the tracks on other collections if you can't find (or afford) this one. Peace!
