Absolutely an essential purchase for any fan of Elton's classic years.

If you want to hear this album with full dynamic range, forget about the 95 remasters, go out and buy the Audio Fidelity Gold CD.

This is my third version of this title on CD (I already had the DJM Records and "The Classic Years" remaster versions along with a vinyl copy). Obviously I love the album, so this review is really about the sonics. The DJM Records version always sounded a bit lifeless and flat, and needed to be turned up loud to hear any level of detail. "The Classic Years" remaster was an improvement, offering more detail at lower levels, and worthy of a great rock performance... not a soft rendering like the DJM. However, I am always wanting the best sounding copy of any given title and am willing to buy multiple versions to accomplish this feat (pathology?). The Audio Fidelity version is yet another improvement... not startling, but significant. "The Classic Years" sounds thinner and less involving... more two dimensional. The AF version offers better defined and deeper bass, and the vibes on "Grow some funk of your own" rang out with realism, where "The Classic Years" sounded toy-like by comparison. Also, this version is NOT a victim of the "loudness wars". Many recent remasters are "hot" and require lower volume settings, but offer no dynamic contrast... just shrill hash. Not the case here. This version has great dynamic contrast that conveys a more realistic soundstage than the other two copies I own. In short, I recommend this version of "Rock of the Westies", and feel if you have a revealing system like I do, you will agree it's worth the investment.

If you want to hear this album with full dynamic range, forget about the 95 remasters, go out and buy the Audio Fidelity Gold CD. It has a warm, smooth sound and you can crank it up with zero distortion. I have yet to buy a CD mastered by Steve Hoffman that wasn't the definitive version. If you care about sound quality, go out and buy this one, but you might want to do it sooner rather than later. AF usually limits their releases to 5,000 copies and as you can see at their website, most of their releases tend to go out of stock pretty quickly. Happy listening!

Because Elton John's output includes so many beautiful ballads it's sometimes easy to forget just how much of a great rock & roller he is. Rock of the Westies is a very good reminder of the hard rockin' Elton John. This new 24K Gold version on Audio Fidelity is far superior to previous releases and a
flawless listening experience when it comes to hearing every note that was played at the original recording session. The pure power and energy bursting on all cylinders is a reflection of the disco music and funk that dominated radio in 1975 when the record was first released. The vocals are crisp and clear and the natural sound of the band is unsurpassed.
I own this album on vinyl and CD and a personal comparison test of those versions proved this release has superior sound quality. I'll go as far as to say listening to this remastered 24K Gold CD was like hearing Rock of the Westies for the first time. It's still nearly all fun and includes Elton's giant hit single, "Island Girl."
Brilliant production, and as always with this company you can not only see the quality and care put into the packaging but you can feel it. A special recording brought to life anew.
