5.0 out of 5 stars Electrifying Blues, February 8, 2001

This review is from: Rockabilly Blues (Audio CD)
According to the liner notes included with this extraordinary album, Mr.Labeef himself thinks it may be his best record. It's easy to see why. Though it is a collection of left-overs from previous recording sessions, it plays like Sleepy's most focused album. All of the songs, as the title suggests, are blues oriented. But, for Sleepy, the blues cannot be confined to a formula. His take on the blues includes elements of country, gospel, bluegrass, and, of course, rockabilly. The performances here are among the most energetic and committed that I have heard on a Sleepy LaBeef album. Fantastic.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of Sleepy. Period., August 19, 2006
This review is from: Rockabilly Blues (Audio CD)
As a diehard Sleepy fan, I have purchsed every recording he has made and seen him live as often as possible. Unforntunately, most of the material on his studio albums have been uneven in quality (often lacking the enthusiasm and raw power of his live shows) with the exception of an occasional few songs. However, this compilation of leftovers ironically is by far his best album. While we wait for the ultimate live album (Nothing But the Truth suffers significantly from very poor room acoustics), the cuts on Rockabilly Blues are amazing. For me, the standout is the first cut, "Bottle Up and Go" which I believe is a complete reworking of an old blues song. I, along with my five- and three-year-old daughters, have listened to this song repeatedly over the past couple of years and have yet to tire of it. To me, if marketed properly, this song could have found a place on country radio (Sleepy's lack of adequate promotion and marketing has always baffled and disappointed me). I strongly recommend this album to anyone interested in "real" American music.

4.0 out of 5 stars fun stuff...., June 25, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Rockabilly Blues (Audio CD)
Yup, good effort from the big guy...always have had a soft spot in my heart for Sleepy, but he's suffered from occasionally uneven musical efforts. This one's a lot of fun. I've managed to annoy my neighbors playing his version of Little Richard's "Rip it Up" over and over again.

Check out that price too....good intro to Sleepy LaBeef
