5.0 out of 5 stars Key concepts of rockabilly guitar- very accessible/logical, August 25, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Rockabilly Guitar Vol 2 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I am a guitar instructor whose students have shown an increasing intersest in "retro" styles like rockabilly and country-blues. Homespun video productions always accomplish what they set out to: provide accessible, logical, and comprehensive coverage of the subject material- which is accessible to the new/intermediate player, and useful to the advanced player. Jim Weider is a particularly talented and engaging instructor. After viewing and using his videos, I have the sense we have actually spent time together and that re-viewing a video segment is like calling him on the phone to ask for a refresher on a particular subject! I have found all of his Homespun productions extremely useful and would "ditto" this review for the others. BY CONTRAST: THERE ARE MANY INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEOS I WOULD CHARACTERIZE AS, "DISORGANIZED, INACCESSIBLE FOR MOST PLAYERS, AND OF RELATIVELY LITTLE VALUE- BETTER SUITED TO APPRECIATING THE ARTIST'S TALENTS THAN LEARNING." REH, Homespun, Starlicks, Hotlicks, and MVP have brought numerous productions to market. My students seem always to report the best results from Homespun and REH, perhaps because these productions are edited logically, i.e. they build on essentials- allowing a progressive sense of competence and achievement for the user. Jim Weider's video's are exceptional in this regard. For great jazz fundamentals and good theory basics in general, see: DiMico,M. "You Can Play Jazz...vol.1-3); Blues/Jazzers should see Robben Ford, and John Scofield on REH (Warner). Country players will want to see Weider, "Country Blues"; S. Wariner "Secrets of..."; Ray Flacke "Tele Virtuosity";and Arlen Roth "Hot Country..."(Hotlicks Prod.).
