Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

It's a funny thing with Rockabye Baby's Lullaby Renditions of Metallica--the disc is both all about the music and it's not. Consider it: on the one hand, here is a righteous, fully recognizable assortment of vintage Metallica tunes, including "Master of Puppets," "Enter Sandman," and "Nothing Else Matters." On the other, what's to stop a suburban massage parlor from passing it off as another generic, therapeutically new-age soundtrack to release tension by? Not a lot. The point being that this is a strangely versatile disc, but one no Metallica-loving new parent should be without. Starting, appropriately enough, at "One," producer and performer Michael Armstrong reduces Kirk Hammett's once rib-crushing riffs to xylophone and toy piano; "Fade to Black" becomes powder-puff pink, "(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth" becomes more like "(Band-Aid) Kissing a Boo-Boo." Somewhat miraculously, what once was suitable listening for leather-wearers only becomes music to fasten Pampers by. Enjoyably. Upping the gift-appeal factor is Metallica's inarguably cool liner notes: scissors, string, tape, and a hole punch turns them into a heavy-metal mobile to hang over baby's bed. --Tammy La Gorce

Product Description

Each release in the Rockabye Baby! series takes the best-known songs of a particular artist and places them in a lullaby processor that involves chimes, bells, and vibraphones -- renditions that are slightly more involved than the music that comes out of the average baby mobile. Whether the original versions are heavy and aggressive or light and subdued, these lullaby versions are uniformly appropriate for their purpose. And, in some cases, they even happen to tease out an unlikely amount of melodicism not apparent in the originals. The Metallica volume features versions of "One," "Enter Sandman," "The Unforgiven," "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)," "(Anethesia) Pulling Teeth" (as opposed to "cutting teeth"), and even "Master of Puppets." ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi

5.0 out of 5 stars Bring my son up ROCKING!! November 23, 2007
Format:Audio CD
This is a great concept. I dont know if i got this more for me or for my son, but he sleeps well when i play this for him. If you're a fan of any of the bands used to create these CDs and have to buy a gift for a new baby or even your own, i highly recommend this.

Beware those minor chords though, they still can sound a little creepy, but it wouldnt be metallica without it :)

I would write the same reviews for the Beatles and Led Zeppelin versions of this as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rock on, little baby....Rock on! December 7, 2006
Format:Audio CD
Not only is the concept of this and the other Rockabye Baby albums by Michael Armstrong pure genius, but the music itself is beautiful, artful, and very enjoyable! My husband and I just had our first child, and are both big fans of old-school rock and alternative, and both also get very annoyed with the tunes most baby bouncers, swings and toys have to offer.

Listening to the Lullaby Renditions of Metallica is very soothing for both baby and adults!

5.0 out of 5 stars My husband LOVED it! November 21, 2006
By T&M
Format:Audio CD
Tonight I gave my husband this CD as a birthday gift from our soon-to-be born son. He has a handful of Metallica CDs so I was hoping he'd think it was cute. He LOVED it! He laughed outloud as he did a quick listen of the first 15 seconds of each song (his normal protocol with any new CD), and then he went back and listened to the entire CD all the way through and kept telling me, "This is awesome, honey!" Baby or not...he said this is his new cure for insomnia, as the CD is totally mellow. He even took the CD with him to show one of his friends! This gift was a WINNER!

3.0 out of 5 stars A little "dark"
While I love Metallica, the renditions in this cd were a little too "spookey" for my daughter (age 4) . After listening to it with her, I can agree. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars For a friend
bought this for a colleague for a gift so I can't attest to the music, however the Rockabye series is normally very good. U2 is the best so far.

Lullabye Metallica?
R. D., you TOTALLY missed the point. This CD is great for young babies. They have the rest of their life to listen to the "real" stuff.

Metallica are the WORST POSERS EVER!!!!!!
This isn't from Metallica. This is done by some guy who also does lullaby CDs of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, and other classic groups. Are they all sellouts too?
