5.0 out of 5 stars Jah Lives, July 9, 2003
By
This review is from: Rockers (Audio CD)
If you are a true roots reggae fan, you must have this Album & Movie! It is the most inspirational, touching album in the universe! The lyrics and the messages that each reggae artists wrote are beyond anyone's reach. This album is indeed legendary due to each crucial reggae masters contribution. "Jah No Deh" is undeniably my favorite song because it reaches unfathomably in my soul. For those who have heard this song and is a true believer of the "Almighty Jah" can easily identify that the voice singing is actually an angel from the heavens above. One Love-One World, Coco Pe Benito. (Washington, DC)

5.0 out of 5 stars Must hear, must see, must own, November 20, 2008

This is a must hear soundtrack and a must see movie! Great versions of extra classics. The Abyssinians harmonizing Satta Massagana with Ras Michael and the Sons of Negus on the hand-drums! Never mind that, not on actual soundtrack. I ask the producers a huge question as to why? And that is just the beginning. Listen for Spear all alone vocally (actually Horsemouth sitting next to him with his head bobbing to imaginary beats!) Big big smile. Love this movie! Spin the sountrack.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Critical and Essential Reggae Collection, July 14, 2009

Gordon Kyd "G-Bone" (Sydney, NSW Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rockers (Audio CD)
The 'Rockers' soundtrack is a showcase of some of the best Jamaican roots rock reggae artists from this glorious, original and fruitful era in reggaes history! Every track and artist sounds totally unique which, for a genre that often gets labelled as sounding all the same, is a testament to it's magic.

I would go as far as saying that this soundtrack is the starting point for anyone unfamiliar with roots reggae who wants to delve further. All the tunes on this soundtrack play an immensely important part in the mood of the film, drenching the viewer in the sounds of Kingston and taking you back to it's studios, streets, bars and sound system parties of the late 70's.

The immortal track 'Graduation In Zion' by the brilliant and mysterious Kiddus I is one of the highlight moments of the soundtrack. The scene in which this song if played within the film is an absolute cracker, showing the inner space of the legendary Channel 1 studios and displays a window into the recording process of the time. Lookout for Robbie Shakespeare and Earl 'China' Smith! Another spectacular tune is Third World's version of The Abyssinians 'Satta Amasa Gana'. All I can say is it is musician's reggae, a brilliant production and a killer performance. There are so many magic songs on this album, too many to list without sounding ridiculous.

As this is a remastered version of this album, there is even more incentive to grab it. The original mastering of the album was somewhat thin and lackluster however the quality of the songs were unquestionably fantastic.

Get it!

I'm frustrated that some of my favorite music from the film is not present, but overall this is still a great collection. Nuff said.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice mix of tunes for multiple listenings, April 5, 2007

I bought this after seeing the movie. I don't know much about reggae and after I did some research on it, and read a lot of reviews, I thought this would be a great introduction. I have not grown tired of listening to it! Most of the tunes are really great, they are classics, and I like all of the tunes. I only skip over a couple after I've been through the CD at least once (in one sitting) and want to hear some particular ones again. I do not hesitate to recommend this as an album. Only complaint is that Satta Massagana is too short!

5.0 out of 5 stars great 70's roots reggae compilation, February 16, 2007

I've never seen the film, but the soundtrack is just fantastic. Almost every track here is a gem. There are so many highlights here, but one is the title track by Bunny Wailer. This is a longer version with more lyrics than the one on his "Roots, Rockers,..." album. It includes several classics, like "Police and Thieves", "Tenement Yard" and "Satta Amasagana" (although I would have prefered the Abyssinians' version). Burning Spear does an interesting a capella song "Jah No Dead".

This CD together with the "Harder They Come" soundtrack would make an excelent introduction to 1970's roots reggae.
