5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT album
This is definitely one of the best albums I own. I hadn't heard "Standing Outside..." when I bought it 4 years ago. I just bought it b/c it was cheap and new. I still listen to it very often and have yet to find anything to take its place. When I want to hear PRG, there just isn't anything else that will do. "Standing..." is a great song, but...

I'd give this two stars except "standing outside a broken phone booth ..." IS a great song. I was just culling my CD collection & couldn't understand why I hadn't played "rocket" more & so put it on & then remembered why & that would be because "standing outside ... etc." is the ONLY good song on the album & not enough to stop me culling this CD to the used CD store so I...

I'd give this two stars except "standing outside a broken phone booth ..." IS a great song. I was just culling my CD collection & couldn't understand why I hadn't played "rocket" more & so put it on & then remembered why & that would be because "standing outside ... etc." is the ONLY good song on the album & not enough to stop me culling this CD to the used CD store so I can buy something better. This is one of those albums where you hear an awesome tune & rush out & buy the CD thinking it's probably pretty good & it turns out only the one song you heard is any good & the rest of it stinks & you get the distinct suspicion some record label guy saw you & a million other ... coming. Point made.

I still listen to it very often and have yet to find anything to take its place. When I want to hear PRG, there just isn't anything else that will do. "Standing..." is a great song, but the rest of the songs on the album are incredible as well. Especially "Rocket" and "Women". The album is a great example of the pseudo-hard rock that was beginning to lose popularity (unfortunately) in the late 90's, and I highly recommend it to anyone who doesn't have narrow taste in music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprising Effort from a One man Band, June 11, 1998

One of the things that makes me angry about radio stations is limited playlists. Because they're afraid to branch out and play music with which no one is familiar, the only song anyone heard by Primitive Radio Gods (who is one guy, paradoxically), "Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth with Money in my Hand". Well, one song is not enough.

If you've missed out on the raw anger of "Mother******" and the quizzical pointedness of "Skin Turns Blue", you owe it to yourself to give this album a listen. I count it among my favorite purchases of 1996.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the Lost Gems of the Last Decade, February 7, 2003

It's funny how things work. Chris O'Connor made this album in his garage, by himself, and some how got a major label to pick it up. They liked it, and so everyone was treated to the single "Standing Outside...." in the summer of 1996. What they did not tell you was how great the record was. Each song is like an opus of guitars, effects, and trippy lyrics. No song souns alike, and each are crafted with such care and delibertion, it is hard to imagine how he made it alone (well he had a little help, but for the majority, it is just him). It is a record full of rich texture, and heart, made by a man who knew nothing more than his love of music, he took his time to sculpt wonderful songs. This is, without a doubt, one of the best records that nobody heard. A true shame that is was not more successful!

4.0 out of 5 stars gets better with repeated listens, February 12, 2004
This review is from: Rocket (Audio CD)
i won't mince words here. i HATED this album the first time i heard it. i was expecting more songs like "standing outside..." with keyboards and drum machines and stuff like that. what i got was what sounded like some washed up hair-metal crap to me. i threw it in the "to sell" pile.
then a friend who shared a lot of musical taste with me saw this album in the pile and told me to forget "standing outside..." and just listen to the cd as a rock album. i was pleasantly suprised to find that the songs stuck in my head and became something more than a one hit wonder's filler for his single. this stuff is actually pretty good. very melodic and powerful especially tracks 1,2,4,and 10. just don't expect anything like the single.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's not *bad*, really..., May 13, 1998

Do you remember that mega-hit from _Cable Guy_, "Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth With Money In My Hand"? DO NOT buy this album just for that song--none of the others come close to matching it, and I suspect it was mixed by somebody else. The other stuff is vaguely catchy, but overall mediocre. "Rocket" is entertaining, "Are You Happy" is interesting, and "Motherfucker" is thought-provoking; but the rest--like "Oo-Mau" and "Woman" are cliched and forgettable. Ah well, you win some, you lose some...let's see if PRG becomes another one-hit-wonder band, or if they manage to pull something worthwhile to follow up the initial boom.

5.0 out of 5 stars Underappreciated and AWESOME, June 20, 1999

This review is from: Rocket (Audio CD)
I bought this CD in 1997 shortly after the single released. It was actually the last copy of the CD in the store and I was more than pleased to add it to my collection. "Standing Outside..." was definately not the best song to release as a single and the full potential of the album will never be known unless you pick it up and listen to it for yourself. I think as many others do that it is a shame PRG never got more than they did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lost Album, June 20, 2003

I just recently re-discovered this album in my stack of old CDs and was amazed at how well it had aged for me. I remember buying this album just for that phonebooth song but then being blown away by the whole thing. And his reznor-like effort of playing all the instruments for all the songs is worth a shot on it's own. (wow doesn't that sound pretentious!)

4.0 out of 5 stars An intriguing combonation of sounds, June 9, 1999

Think of Radiohead songs played by Eve 6 with Beck throwing his two cents in and you have Primitive Radio Gods. You've got a fairly plain rock album with some nice twists and turns.

1.0 out of 5 stars Yuck!, January 14, 1999

How can such an AMAZING song come from such an AWFUL album?! Standing... is among my favorite songs of all time, and Skin Turns Blue is really good too, but the rest of the CD is pitiful. This is among the worst CDs I've ever bought!
