From its quiet introductory passages to the swooping, rich crescendos at the end, "Rocket Man" is one of the most flawless pop songs of the 1970s. The layering of various instruments -- synthesizers, pedal steel, electric and acoustic guitars -- and stylistic motifs is simply brilliant. Many production styles that other artists used throughout the decade -- techniques that are considered emblematic of 'Seventies cheesiness and excess -- are employed here as high art, on one of the truly perfect multi-tracked '70s pop songs. "Rocket Man" cracked into the US Top 10 in 1972, one of Elton John's earliest hits and most evocative anthems: it's a classic that makes you sing along every time you hear it.

Really, how can you not love this song, riding down the road with the speakers turned up? (sings) "Rocket Man! Burnin' out his fuse up HERE alone!"
